    The Way Ahead

I think it is one of the best British WW2 films made with a great cast.

I watched (for the umpteenth time) "The Way Ahead" and revelled in the casting which seemed to include nearly all the British film actors of that time.
While thinking of David Niven, I see I wrote about him on an earlier thread:

    Have you seen this site?

    Actors in WWII

I am in reminded that in 1942, whilst awating my call-up I was living near Luton and commuting daily to London.
One day when stopping at Welwyn Garden I was surprised to see a very dashing young officer board the train, none other than David Niven.

Immediately familiar once I turned it on. (I rarely remember the name of any old film). Was there some kind of law that one couldn't cast a British film of the period without including Stanley Holloway .

Love the way Niven pronounces 'Cerriers'

Seen it before, but thoroughly enjoyed it again. Some great British actors in the cast.

I have to agree with Drew, the site of Bill Swingler doing his weight training, exersize bike and rowing machine at 101 says it all

I did chuckle at that and the bit about them waiting for the women pensioners and the ladies uniforms. I was quite surprised to see that they keep everything so regimented. Bless em.

    Great Viewing.

I think its on at 1140 tonight on BBC1.

    The Great Raid.

Its a movie based on the true story of the US Ranger raid on the Japanese POW camp. There was some clips on here on another thread linked with the new Band of Brothers film set in the Pacific.

A few members showed some interest in the film thats on tonight-Enjoy :D

    Cheers

    Ivan1 "Take this!!!"

I didn't like The Great Raid. I was mostly disappointed by the way how the movie was switching from combat line scenes to the rear. It was a totally different story than the one presented in its trailer.

Trailers in general have a big tendency to lie.

    Part 4 tomorrow (Friday 20th) at 1900hrs on BBC2

Documentary series about the Chelsea Pensioners, former British soldiers who live in the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. Frank Chambers and Joe Britton first became mates as Royal Fusiliers in India in 1936, but lost touch. After nearly 70 years, they meet again as Chelsea Pensioners and rekindle their friendship. Dougie Huxley and Don Smith met on their first day as new recruits at the Hospital and became inseparable. Is their past as soldiers the reason their friendship bonds are so strong?

Last weeks was quite moving, a new chap that had just gone in found out a resident was a close mate of his in a Japanese PoW camp and had saved his life in the camp. The sad thing was he couldn't remember him after finaly meeting up again some 65 years later.

    Very Humbling stuff :(

    Cheers

It's not on the tv today, not even this month, but I caught the back end of a terrific movie the other day, one unknown to me and the type I love - foreign movie made shortly after the war in the correct locations and with the correct kit and the real people playing themselves!

There is a working Tiger tank which you see get petrol bombed. there's SS men with original uniforms etc....

Also, it's on one of those back-end channels on the Sky network.

It isn't available on DVD, so when it's on again (hopefully next month) I'll record it and can happily make it available to interested forum members -
