Ahh, no worries, I have a newer edition but since it didn't have the appendices, I just scanned them from a library book.
    Cheers!

    Mfield,
There is a great battlefield memoir on the Lincs titled 'Because We Are Canadians' written by Charles D Kipp. Kipp was with the Lincs through Normandy to the end of the war. My copy is out on loan so I cannot give you the ISBN number. Should be available through Indigo or Amazon.
Good luck with your research. Dryan67 is an expert on all things Canadian even though he is an American!

I have just finished "Because we are Canadians" and "The history of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment" Awersome reads, for me because my great uncle is in the book I couldnt put it down until I was done.

I am terrible at online research, I have ordered his service record, I got a quote from the UK national archives on copying the War Diary of the lincoln and welland Regiment...They want $4.26 a page...I need help getting a copy of the war diaries...if anyone can help?

    Hi there.

I've been trying without luck to get my hands on a copy of warpath. From what I've been able to tell, my grandfather, George Whitehead, joined up with the Algonquin Regiment in October or November 1944 and was taken prisoner near Xanten, Germany on March 2, 1945. Could anyone with a copy of warpath or the war diaries tell me if there's mention of him or the events of that day??

    Thanks so much!

    Erin

    Erin,

Over 12 pages in Warpath are dedicated to the action east of Udem from Feb. 26th to Mar. 3rd, 1945. Your grandfather is listed as one of 39 Algonquins reported as Missing during this period.

The high level summary of that period describes it as, "If ever a battalion was strung out from hell to breakfast, this one was now. Sixty % of our vehicles bogged down, all four companies in different locations, noen of them where they should be, and an order to rendezvous in an area miles away at a time when it was physically impossible to be there."

Your grandfather almost certainly belonged to "D" Company, who on the 2nd, in attempting to secure their objective of the bridge over the Hohe Ley, were cut off and surrounded by strong German counter attacks. D Co. was working with the Lake Superior Regiment in this action and the company was cut off east of their objective, astride the Goch-Xanten Rail line. All this occurred during the final stages of the Battle of the Hochwald Gap.

I can scan those pages if you have further interest.

    Evening,

I am wondering if there is any mention of Private William Dunnett? I found info and his name through a Facebook group and did some research on the CWGC websites and know where he is resting but is there anything else about him that the Regt might have recorded?

As far as I know he was KIA 1 March 1945.

There is no specific mention of Pte. Dunnett in Warpath other than in the nominal role and that confirms that he was killed on 03/01/45 and that he joned the regiment on 09/29/44. Service # G2287. Any idea which Company he was in? He was obviously killed during the Hochwald battle and March 1st was particularly costly to all Companies.

Thanks. No nothing more now than his svc number and his regiment and date. Thru the CWGC I know where he is buried which is good since our marching units for Nijnmegen are always in that area.

I'm asking cause his name popped up in a Facebook group of my home area in the Miramichi NB. He was one of four brothers. All went and he was the only not to return. The Dunnett family next door sent three over and all three came back.

Hello - this is my first post so please bear with me. My great-uncle, Arthur Peter McLaren Donald, age 40, died near Rastede Germany on May 5 1945. He was a private in the Algonquin Regiment. I have found his grave on CWG in the Netherlands. I was hoping someone might have information on this time and place of war. This was so close to the end of the war, I have often wondered about what was happening there and then. I too cant locate the war diaries or the Warpath book... thanks, Karen

According to Warpath, he's listed as killed in the actions around Rastede. According to G. L. Cassidy, all casualties were sustained no later than 4th May.

    Hello,

I'm looking for information on L/Cpl Bernard Allen Asplund, who was a member of the Algonquin Regiment and died November 21, 1944. I'd like to know what the Regiment was doing at the time he was killed. The information I have says he died when he stepped on a land mine.

Can any one help me find war diaries or other documents that may give some information.

    Thanks.
