It was essential for this place to be held as a pivot and forming-up place of the attack on STOPPLACCE. The Company was on its own for six days and nights during which time it was under constant and heavy shell-fire. It was counter-attacked on two occasions and frequently patrolled against by day and night. Captain ROLLO's example inspired all those under his command during this trying time. He continually visited Platoon positions whilst the shelling was at its heaviest; he lead a fighting patrol to break up an enemy counter-attack on the night of 9th July / 10th July, which succeeded in scattering the enemy, killing four and wounding several. He led a daylight patrol on 12th July afternoon which resulted in the elimination of a complete German Observation Post. Finally Captain ROLLO led his Company in the attack on STOPPLACCE on 15th July with great skill and courage succeeding in taking fifteen prisoners and dealing with three Machine Gun posts. It was largely owing to Captain ROLLO's high courage and outstanding example and cheerfulness that No. 3 Company held the vital position which made the final attack, which assisted in the capture of AREZZO, possible. Signed E.J.B. NELSON, Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 3rd Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS Granted an Immediate M.C.
