La Marvindiere 4 August 1944: Lt Keating's tank had been brought up from the
Forward Delivery Squadron,it was crewed by
    Coldstreamers.My Father,2657980 Gdsn David Blyth

Hello madcyclist and welcome to the forum
Thanks for posting about your father and the other members of the crew.
Do you have any photos of your father, which you'd care to share? Have you done much research already?

    Sorry about slowness to reply, been transcribing Do records exist for;
b Burials 2 (Armoured) Battalion Irish Guards?

Using Geoff's wonderfully versatile search engine Geoff's 1939-47 Search Engine
a list of 2bn fatalities for dates between 01/07/1944-31/12/1947; click on the link to access full details including Cemetery etc. Some of these will naturally be fatalities when they were no longer armoured, but deliberately done so to include those who may have died of wounds some time after.

    Do records exist for;
a 5 Guards Armoured Brigade Tank/Forward Delivery Squadron?

Fraid not that I could find - i haven't dared yet look at what is available for higher formations.

There are these for 5 Gds Armd Bde, but nothing about what I think that you'd be looking for. in fact the diaries available seem to also exclude Training and Holding bns - which would've been a fine thing to read up on too, I think.

    WO 166/6655
War Office: Home Forces: War Diaries, Second World War
Scope and content: ARMOURED BRIGADES: 5 GUARDS ARMOURED BRIGADE: Headquarters (HQ).
    Covering dates: 1942 Jan.-Dec.

    WO 267/198
War Office: British Army of the Rhine: Quarterly Historical Reports
Scope and content: 5 Guards Brigade
    Covering dates: 1946 July-Sept.

Hits within TNA for "Tank / Forward Delivery Squadron" cover Royal Armoured Corps only ...?? I really don't know enough about this at all.

Have you applied to Wellington Barracks for your father's service records? I imagine so if you have such details already.

However, another way would be to also get a copy of records for another crew member. There might be some more details - worth taking a chance over particularly if you want a fuller picture of the crew and what happened to them all. Since they are CWGC casualties, they fall in the MOD's +25yrs category and applicants in these cases need not be relatives; a copy of the certificate is sufficient for proof of date of death, but it would naturally require yet another fee to be paid.

    Evening Diane,

Thankyou for the response & information.I believe you may have heard from John Devlin.

Burial Records; what I should have made clear is,it is the "FIRST BURIAL" records that am I'm asking about.ie whom, where, when etc, those KIA are presumably buried & recorded by the unit.

Forward Delivery Squadron; other than it is included in 5 Guards Armoured Brigade ORBAT,it seems to be a best kept secret!

Got a copy of me Dad's Service Records from RHQ Coldstream Guards some years ago thankyou.

It's unlikely at this late stage, that we will ever know what happened to the rest of Lt Keatinge's crew.Short of exhuming every "Unkown Soldier's" grave in the St Charles De Percy.UNLESS SOMEONE KNOWS DIFFERENT THAT IS!

Sorry if I've banged on a bit.

Montchamp & St Charles De Percy 70th Anniversary Events

Are any Veterans of 1st (Armoured) Battalion Coldstream Guards or 2nd (Armoured) Battalion Irish Guards attending the above events on 6th June?
I ask as my Father 2657980 Gdsmn David Blyth,a member of a Coldstream crewed Sherman, was KIA 4 August '44 at La Marvindiere, whilst attached to 2 Irish Guards. The tank was commanded by Lt John keatinge.

I recently discovered that what I'd thought to be an ad-hoc organisation within the GAD, was in fact 268 FDS. Bovington have provided the 268's War Diary which is all the Unit's archival material they hold.

My interest: my Father 2657980 Gdsm David Blyth was attached to 268 FDS from 1st (Armoured) Battalion Coldstream Guards. His one of two Shermans "issued" to 2nd (Armoured) Battalion 3 August 1944. The tank crewed by Coldstreamers & commanded by an Irish Guards officer, was knocked out at La Marvindiere 24hrs later.

Grateful for any further information on 268 FDS or where it may be found please. Thank you.

Ramiles Researching 9th Lancers, 24th L and SRY

Is there much then in the 268's War Diary which Bovington has provided?

And did you also get the tracer card, and what did the full records say?

When the 24th Lancers were disbanded at the end of July 1944 / Start of August 1944 -
24th Lancers Regimental Nominal Roll and Postings August 1944

...a lot of the 24th Lancers went as unposted reinforcements X(iv) into various FDS's.

This would have been prior to their moving to other regiments, mainly, and the other regiments war diaries, for instance can contain refs. to the FDS's i.e. the SRY war diary has a (small) number of ref's to 265 FDS.

    e.g. 265 Forward Delivery Squadron
