Hi updating my post and. I am still researching my Grandad, he was in 27 London Electrical Engineers searchlight regiment , that changed over to RA. 27 LEE RA arrived in Egypt on 16 Dec1940 and in April 1940 an advance party went to Tobruk by sea using HMAS and the main body 10 & 12 troops of 306 Battery went in June, they were sent to Tobruk to relieve Royal Wilshire Yeomanry. They served in the harbour area between 17 June 1941 to 25 February 1942, they manned 10 Search lights 9 manning each position.and 2 x 102 mm Italian guns. There were 5 Officers and 161 ORs in the 306th detached battery. When they were relieved by 305 LEE they took all the Italian equipment with them . i have grids and a sketch map of the positions if anyone is interested. anyone who could add to my knowledge would be greatly appreciated Regards Darren
Thanks for all the above information, my great uncle died on the 17th May 1941 at Tobruk with 51st Reg, Royal Artillery. Any information on the exact location and what they were doing would be greatly appreciated. Gnr 1021320 Ernest William England
Gunner400 - he also appears in Post 2115: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery - Roll of Honour, 1939-47 It appears that Post 21 has been answered on: Royal Engineers: North Africa 1940 - Italy 1943
Thanks for posting that. I've been reading up on him after seeing his name on Eastleach war memorial. Can you photograph your local war memorial? (UK)
The Isle of Wight Rifles by D. J. Quigley (Isle of Wight Rifles - History - The Second World War 1935 - 1945) contains a memoir (pp32-40) of the siege by Sergeant Bob Lawn. The Isle of Wight Rifles had become 530 Coast Regiment (Isle of Wight Rifles), Royal Artillery in the 1920s. His battery was posted overseas in March 1941. Timings are vague after that but it appears it was transferred to Tobruk aboard the destroyer HMAS Voyager some time before July. It apparently took over two coastal guns at Fort Marina. One of these could exchange fire with Axis guns in the direction of Bardia. However the second could not as it was masked by the first. He offers no dates but says "During the course of the following week, 206 Battery arrived and by reshuffling the two batteries the Tobruk Regiment, R. A., was formed. 202 Battery were stationed at Fort Marina with the headquarters staff manning 14.9mm Skoda-Werke guns plus the usual light ack-ack equipment. 206 battery were down at the harbour entrance manning British four inch naval guns, various light Italian guns and the searchlights. 432 was a new battery that was formed and manned searchlights, three pounders and later 12 pounders." The third battery was formed from the other two and it took some time for reinforcements to bring the regiment up to strength.

Leslie, Welcome aboard. I strongly urge you to amend the other thread for your father with his full name, service number (if known) and unit as the title. Hopefully it will get more attention and help. Tell us all you can about his service - which you may have done. It will stop duplication.
