The politicians who stand with such respect each November have been shamed by the British public , it will be the last year for many to go 65 years on.:poppy:

Have phoned them and they have taken my details. They have not finalised the award system for descendants of veterans yet, but here's hoping !!!

I seemed to have missed something here. On the radio about a week or so ago the Veterans Minister said that help would be available. It transpires that some European Leaders will be attending commemorations in Normandy and our glorious PM can attend, presumably to add to the photo album. Has funding not been provided?

Is it open just to D Day vets?

No Paul, it started as a result of the Normandy Veterans Campaign, but there is no way that they can predujice vets who fought elsewhere, so in effect it will be a rerun of the 1st Hero's returns Grants.

Sadly, it took the Public to raise the funds for the NVA before the goverment realised that they had made an error of judgement.

Thankfully Peter Hodge has stuck by his guns and said that the National Association will not be accepting the NL money at this late stage so that they can steal the limelight.

This does not however stop individuals applying direct to the NL

Brian, Peter Hodge has been campaigning since June 2008 for the Goverment to fund / support the 65th Anniversary. In OCtober 2008 he was told a definate No, as the 65th was not recongnised. He then launched an appeal to raise the funds through Private donatation which he has achieved.

The appeal was to cover the costs of all Normandy Veterans who registered with the National Association as wanting to return to Normandy and this became the 'Overlord' List.

At the same time as this the local branches set about raising their own funds and again this has been succesful.

His point is that at a stage when the British Public has raised the funds for the appeal, he is not prepared to let the Goverment / National Lottery come in at the 11th hour and take all the credit.

As I stated, this does not stop individuals applying to the NL if they are not on the original Overlord list

Hope this is a bit clearer now

I telephoned the Lottery number in the DM the other day and was told they had no instructions, just to take my name and phone number.

I had already emailed Peter Hodge via the Dutch veterans website, but got no reply. The local branch of NVA that I was a member of closed down two years ago.

I've just emailed my MP to enquire how to tap into this fund and that of MOD.

I also asked how to obtain the necessary security passes for the American Cemetery commemoration ceremony, as my less fortunate RAF comrades who fell on D-day landed on Omaha Beach in support of the Americans, as did I. I only got admission to the 60th Anniversary there five years ago through a chance encounter with a US Marine Corps Colonel, who had a spare pass in his pocket.

I don't think he'll be there his time!

By the way, the Daily Mail article that gave the 'phone number also said that the Lottery contribution would "be too late for the Normandy Veterans"! Which mystifies me.

While you & DoctorD were chatting amongst yourselves did you notice they've whipped the Brass Hat from our Avatars ?

As one 85 year old to another 84 year old I can only hope that this is not the thin edge of the wedge :)

    Cheers

It's ok Ron, in an effort to get the forum running more smoothly we have removed ranks. They were dragging us down... you know what the weight of one stripe can be alone!!?

Sorry Ron, it may have been at my instigation. I 'complained' at having an Army brass hat displayed on my Avtar as I felt it inappropriate for a 'Brylcreem' boy. I didn't actually complain, but suggested that an Air Chief Marshall's cheese cutter might be more suited to my taste.:indexCA7C9VES:

As we were wont to say in wartime italy..."non fa niente!".

If the removal of surplus pixels speeds up the system in any way whatsoever then I am 100% in favour.

Just keep your hands off my 78 Div flash :)

    Not so Mr Reed!
The ranks were binned... because I never liked 'em!
They just always looked messy to me, and stretched short posts unecessarily.
Sorry if the wrong end of the stick was implied by the thin end of my wedge.

Have to say DoctorD's discomfiture at having an Army Brass Hat was the final impetus to me to sort their removal though.
Maybe direct any complaints to him via RAF HQ? ;).
