On my forthcoming Arnhem Battlefield Tour I plan to spend a couple of hours in the centre of Nijmegen on the Friday afternoon, on the way from Rotterdam to Arnhem. Part of it will be free time for the boys (and staff!). Last time in 2003 I did a fairly brief stand on the esplanade overloooking the Waal, describing the 82nd airborne dinghy-borne assault and Guards Armoured's storming of the bridge. Has anyone got a recommenadation for one more possible stand in the central Nijmegen area? As mentioned elsewhere we are already visiting Jonkerbos Cemetery and the Groesbeek Liberation Museum. I need parking for the coach if it's not right in the centre. I looked at stopping on the other side of the bridge last time, in the area of the supposed British/American contretemps on the evening of 20th September, but in the end I abandoned this idea because I didn't know of a good layby or similar in the vicinity.

    Mark,

If you're visiting the Groesbeek Museum, it maybe worth a while to joust over the Border and visit the Reichswald Cemetery. A very moving place with some well known graves of some of the "Dambusters".

Thanks. It might just be just a bit too far given our tight time schedule on that day. I must admit that I've always wanted to visit Reichswald and hadn't realised until I checked that it's actually pretty close to Groesbeek. One of our school old boys (RAF) is buried there.
