The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister

Nonna Bannister carried a secret almost to her Tennessee grave: the diaries she kept as a young girl experiencing the horrors of the Holocaust while learning compassion and love for her fellow human beings. Nonna's writings tell the remarkable tale of how a Russian girl, born into a family that had known wealth and privileges, was exposed to the concentration camps and learned the value of human life and the importance of forgiveness.

I got this one as a freebie for my Kindle. Its as good as it looks and gives a really good at what others suffered in that arena.

Newly updated with historical records not available when the first edition was done. Not a lot available in English on the Soviet Air force so this could become the new standard work.

    Product Description
During the darkest days of the Second World War, the Allies listened intently to the messages of the enemy. Every whisper built a picture of the threat to come - weapons that were terrifying in their murderous capabilities. Target London is the dramatic tale of the inception of the German V-weapons, the Allies' epic race to discover the truth about them and the rockets' effects on the streets of London. Investigative historian Christy Campbell brilliantly interweaves the many strands of this gripping episode. At the heart of this tale is London - the target of Nazi Germany's plan to crush British morale.

Ben Macintyre's new book out tomorrow.

He was on the Andrew Marr show yesterday.

BBC News - D-Day double crossing

His earlier work is very enjoyable and I'm sure Double Cross will be to the same standard.

Savage Continent - Europe in the Aftermath of WWII
    Keith Lowe
    Penguin-Viking
    ISBN 978-0-670-91746-4
    £25

    5th April 2012

This book makes fascinating reading and opens your eyes to the political events in Europe since WWII - it relates the ethnic cleansing that took place from France to Russia with few European nations immune from ethnic or political revenge, reading it also points to wounds that are possibly festering still as well as showing the sources of recent conflicts.

    I recommend this highly.

In the last days of July 1943, British and American planes dropped 9,000 tons of bombs with the intention of erasing the German city from the map. The resultant firestorm burned for a month and left 40,000 civilians dead.

Inferno is a searing account of terrifying destruction: of how and why the Allies dropped a hail of high-explosive and incendiary bombs; of blizzards of sparks, hurricane-force winds and 800-degree temperatures; of survivors cowering in basements or struggling along melting streets; of a city and its people near annihilated from above.

Inferno is an epic story of human devastation and survival against impossible odds.

Could be a worthwhile read. The last book I read on this subject was Middlebrook's.
