I feel like I understand the weight classification system for bridges and rafts and vehicles. But why was the Class 50/60 raft referred to that way as opposed to simply Class 50? Were there construction options to it?
Yes. Apparently it could be constructed using either four pontoons (Class 50) or five (Class 60). Source: One more river to cross (Col JH Joiner- Leo Cooper 2001). Chris
The same is noted in MTP No.74, Part II (Jul 1944); "Craft 50/60 Raft equipment requires 4 Pontoons (Cl 50/60), 4 lorry units and 4 trailers for Class 50 - 5 Pontoons (Cl 50/60), 5 lorry units and 5 trailer units for Class 60". The RASC Platoon for Raft Equipment, Type "A", was to carry four sets of 50/60 pontoon rafts. They had 20 tractor/trailer combinations, so presumably they could work within that total to construct five Class 50 or four Type 60 raft equipments. Gary
