Just loosely connected, but does anyone know about the 2nd bn being posted to Brayton Barff in Yorkshire at the same time as the 4th bn being posted to Goole?

Just an addition to this post, there was another Royal Sussex Btn., the 9th ( known as The Shiny Ninth). They served in Burma and I run a Facebook Page solely for that unit 1940-1946. I have also had the personal diaries of one of the NCOs published. These cover 1944 and 1945. Details below. There are also other threads which cover the 9th.

    Hi everyone,
I just joined as been looking into my great uncle who died on way to Dunkirk. He was Royal Sussex and is buried in Diksmuide cemetery in Belgium. I have his number, how do I find out which battalion he was in?
    Thanks for your help

Hello clouise26, following courtesy of CWGC website (link below image)

Hopefully the service number on the CWGC certificate matches the one you have. Listed as 2nd Battalion.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

Also listed on Official Casualty List(s) held at The National Archives, which have subsequently been digitised and are available through FMP subscription service.

Just say the word and I will pass the details to you (I won't post them within this thread without your say so clouise26).

Thank you so much Jim and sorry for the delayed response! Yes that is Uncle Jack....he was already a regular soldier so when the war started he was one of the first to go. I have a letter that he sent home just before he was killed, from May 1941, which I can post a copy of here if anyone is interested?

If you could please share the Official Casualty List information that would also be great, thank you. Happy for you to post them on this thread.

Hello clouise, sorry it's taken a few hours, had forgotten where I'd saved them!

Official Casualty List No. 239 published 24th June 1940, page 3, and close up of Royal Sussex Regiment casualties.

And Official Casualty List No. 290 published 24th August 1940, page 40, and close up (this is an update and correction to the circumstances originally recorded in List No. 239 above).

Good luck with all your research.

Only just joined so forgive me if this is not the right format/question. Our late father was Frederick Ernest Webb. We know he was in the Royal Sussex but not sure of which regiment. He did not enlist (due to occupation) until 1942. He knew a few words of German so must have been there. He was wounded at the battle of Casino and carried shrapnel in his body for the rest of his life. He also told us he was in service in Greece. But he never really spoke much about his time. But the odd thing is we have found out that he was not demobbed until 1948. Why was that? We have requested his war record but we understand this could take a year or more to come. Would be grateful for any help.

If he was at Cassino he would have been in the 1st Battalion.
My father did some extra time too.
It reads like he took the same journey as mine from being at Cassino.
There is another post that I have put up some pictures in.

Do you have any of your late Father?

The only photo we found when we were clearing his home was one of him in St Mark's Square in Venice. Something else he never mentioned! How could he not talk about that? And Greece?

The more you learn, the more you will understand.
My late Father managed to find one of his mates living in Hastings. The chap denied knowing him or ever going to war.
I think many just wanted to have a quiet life and never think of those times again.
All I have is snippits from when I was too young to understand.
When he was ready to talk, I was too busy with my pitiful life.
