Yes, he really did. I can tell you a funny little anecdote that supports it -

During a stormy night in 1955, a loud rap announced the return home of my Grandfather after two years service in Suez. Carrying her toddler to the door, my Grandmother opened it to see a dark figure, soaked from head to toe on the other side. My Grandmother was delighted to see her husband after so long - my mother on the other hand was not. She went berserk, crying and screaming - it was essentially the first time my mother had met him and it rather set the tone for the remainder of their relationship!
