Hi, I am trying to find out what my grandfather was doing in WW2. We were lead to believe he was guarding POW's. His company was Royal Engineers Artisan Works 691 Company. Looking at his army records, he left England on the 25 June 1945 with the British Liberation Army.
He signed up 12 November 1940 at Portsmouth if that helps.

    Many Thanks

    Hi,

    Wrlcome to the forum.

You really need to apply to UK MOD for his service records via this link -

Request records of deceased service personnel

It can be a long wait but the records will be the foundation of all other research.

    EDIT TO ADD

You may find a brief mention of him on the RE Tracer Cards available on Ancestry or Findmypast.

Is his number 1947301, may be worth editing the title just to be safe. If you upload his service records members may be able to help you interpret them.

CRS - Camp Reception Station? Edit - on other resources perhaps Casualty Reception Station although he doesn't seem to appear in casualty lists.

108 British General Hosp was in Brussels in January 46.

    Hi,

Thanks for clarifying in your second post that you already have the service record and tracer card.

I would’ve expected if he had been individually posted, or attached, to POW camp duties from his RE unit that movement would’ve been reflected in a service record entry - it was for an uncle who was attached to a POW camp in Austria after his RA unit was disbanded.

You really need to see the unit war diary just in case the whole unit were deployed on POW duties - possibly maintaining the buildings used rather than on “guard” duties.

If you asking for them to copy the war diary don't bother, they are too expensive.
Ask Gary Tankard , Drew5233 or PsyWar.Org , they are much cheaper.
