Hi All, Please see attached part of my Grandfather's service record. I'm looking for help with abbreviations and in identifying the units and their locations that he served with after he was repatriated from Stalag XXa. Many thanks, Dean Darvill
Hi, It might help members if you attach “sharper” images of the queried documents. I am struggling to make out the RAOC units you want information about. My father was a pre war regular soldier who was a repatriated POW from Germany. He had attachments to various Royal Army Ordnance Corps units performing less than onerous guard duties at large Motor Transport Vehicle Reserve Depots (VRD) from August 1945 through to Feb 1946 pending his demobilisation to Class B Army Reserve. In an effort to identify these RAOC units and their locations I made a note of all RAOC units and locations mentioned in correspondence in the Findmypast Scots Guards service files for other returning POW as below. I can’t make out whether any of the below units are queried in your attached images. I’m not aware of a definitive list of these RAOC units. Steve No 1 Chilwell MT Group RAOC Eastwoodhill House, Eastwood Toll Giffnock Glasgow No 4 Chilwell MT Group RAOC Halton Castle Runcorn Cheshire 6 Battalion RAOC Chilwell Beeston Notts 2nd Battalion RAOC Cadley Camp Savernake Wiltshire No 5 Chilwell MT Group RAOC HQ Pimley Manor Uffington Nr Shrewsbury Shropshire No 11 Chilwell MT Group Hurst Lane Castle Bromwich Warwickshire
Hi Steve, Thanks for replying. Unfortunately they are scans done by the National Archive. You have helped as you have identified the the 6th Battalion RAoc location and what the abbreviation cMTg is. Many thanks, Dean
Hi Dean, did you ever get any stories from him about the POW camp? Looks mad what with the red brick castle etc. All the best James
Hi James, Unfortunately no. He passed away suddenly when I was about 9 years old. I don't think he spoke much about his experiences at all, my surviving uncles knew little about his service. Regards Dean
Hi Dean, no worries - I can understand that. It looks like a bit of an engrossing place to research; there was a movie actor held there too, who described their conditions. All the best James
This topic is a list of books about Stalag XXA XXB. I presume the book James was referencing was written by Sam Kydd - For You The War Is Over. It is out of print but you could get it in an inter library loan. Books about XXa and XXb Steve
Hi Steve, Thank you for posting this list, I have a couple of them, but will see If I can access the others. Regards Dean
