Just had 3 days on Gibraltar before crossing into Spain. Lots of military history, and came across (what I believe) is a gun control unit... Can anyone identify?
Long ago spent a week inspecting the fortifications there. If no-one here answers you might be worth asking the Gibraltar Museum. There a couple of artillery experts I know too, neither in Gibraltar, who I will ask to have a look.
Any bits in the background that look familiar Steve? Kind regards, good on Alfie and Pete, always, Jim. P.S. There are four other Forces News Gibraltar movies, the below being no. 1
On reflection I think the instrument may refer to the three 9.2" guns atop The Rock, as I can only read 'Bearing' and there is no height shown - which the dual-purpose 5.25" battery would need. I was able to wander around one 9.2", there were no such instruments on display, possibly as it was only the turret, not a control point.
Last day of Birding in the 'straits' before we head home. On the Spanish side we came across this huge gun which I was told came from a ship and may have been used in civil war before positioned across the water, as they thought the Allies may attack... (Approx: 36° 01' 13.886" -05° 34' 47.770") Also (at another location) this pill box which is now sunk into the ground, probably due to ground level being raised around it... There is a Spanish "Gibraltar" along the coast west of Gib itself, it is called Tarifa. Friends have been there, not I. The guns may be British! See: Paloma Alta Artillery Battery to become a Theme Park! and Photo Cannon Vickers 361/45 mm – Excursions and Holiday Activities in Tarifa Probably more photos online.
Yes, Tarifa was one of our locations to view the migration of vultures, white storks & so on. The word tariff is derived from some guy who collected a toll, and hence tarifa (or something like that).
Thanks once again Jim for the video links which I've now been able to properly view. Here are a few more photos from our short stay... Some sort of ballistic calculator... Some data... Electrical control room... Laurence Scott generator... Store room... Gun loader... Tunnel... and the angel in St Michael's cave... Planning a trip to Gibraltar? Two things to note:- 1) some museums only open Mon-Fri 2) food is mostly pretty poor. Exceptions include Monique's which was fab, but probably best to book if you want to go at the weekend.
