Hello. I am trying to find out about my fathers war service record from the Burma Campaign. My father was RSM Jack Sheppard of 25 Field Regiment in Hong Kong in 1951 where I was born on the 14th October in Kowloon. He fought with Bill Slim 14th Army and met my mother in Maymyo in 1945 after she and our family were liberated from the Japanese interment camps.
Jack Sheppard retired in 1961 as a Captain. His last posting was as QM to The All Arms Junior Leaders Regiment Tonfanau camp in North Wales.
I am writing a book and would appreciate if anyone can help me on this as where to look or if there are any surviving Gunners who knew him. Jack passed away in 1992 aged only 69. He was a proffesional fly fishing instructor, one of the finest in England.

My late father was out in Hong Kong over that period. I asked my mother if she had ever heard my father mention your father's name and she said it was familiar. She is trying to recall the CO's name at the time but can only recall that his nick-name was "Twicer", obviously a double barreled name of some sort. If it comes back to her I will update this post later. If you have any photos please post them.

    cheers

My father would have loved to see your photos. I can remember we were watching a documentary about Hong Kong one night. The camera was passing over the skyscrapers and he suddenly pointed at the TV and said "did you see that little building with the red roof"? A small building lost between the huge skyscrapers. "Why what was it" I said. "That used to be the tallest building on the Island, the 4 story Hong and Shanghai National Bank".
It was a place he always wanted to go back to. Sadly he never got the opportunity.

    Cheers

I have been back to HK a few times now with my wife and when I was working in China last year. My most recent visit was last month on holiday as I love the place. I went to the church on Nathan Road in Kowloon where I was christened 61 years ago, St Andrews Church. Also I still have in my possesion the Japanese battle flag my father took in Burma and passed down to me. I have been offered money for it but I will NEVER sell it. It will be passed down again and again as an heir loom.
    Cheers Kevin

    Hi

My father was stationed at Kowloon for a period 1946-1947 and during this time he took a lot of photos (snapshots really, nothing special). On the back of one of these he had written "Sgt Sheppard". However, I don't know if this was your father as my dad was a Sgt in 27th Field Regiment. I can post the picture if you're interested?

Hi skydiver, I can't help you with your dads war service record, but my dad, who is 82, remembers yours from his national service time with 25 Regiment RA in Hongkong! He was an experienced lorry driver before joining and he landed the duty of picking the snco's up in the morning and taking them to the ferry and doing the return journey in the afternoon. He recalls collecting three sgts before picking your dad up at his home.

Do you have any photos of your dad from his time in Hongkong ?

Hi Kevin, thanks for the reply, great photos, I'll show them to my dad next time I visit. On a personal note I like the one in front of inkerman building, I did my basic training with Inkerman Troop, woolwich in '75 before joining 40 Regiment in Gutersloh.

I have just discovered that the 27th Field Regiment became the 25th Field Regiment on 1st April 1947, so it seems highly likely that it is the same Sgt Sheppard. I will upload a few photos in due course!

My dad had finished as a regular by that time but carried on as with the TA for a few years. I believe he also spent some time in Gutersloh too. We were lived in Lippstat for a short while in the early 60's and I think my father was based in Dortmund.

This is the photo I referred to. My dad had written "Sgt Shepperd" on the back of the snap (this is spelt wrong I realise) - Kowloon early 1947. The second photo is my father Sgt Atkins in the same pose. I will post a full set in due course.
