Been finding this site really informative, although researching my dad's time in Burma in RAF, also my Uncle Frederick Iryl Price 14215427 Pte, I have a copy of his service record he transferred to the 1st Bt South Staffs on 2.5.44, he was presumed died of wounds on or shortly after on the 12.6.44.
I have seen the war diary's for June and what was happening that has been posted, where would u find casualty list for that day or month to see if he was there as we have no information where he was only the day he died, Also would be have been a chindit.

    Hi,

Probanly better to have started a new topic on your relative rather than posting here. I’ll ask a MOD to spin off your Post to a standalone topic.

Service record usually say which unit a man is serving at the time he died but when it says died on or after a date it is hard to be more specific.

The official War Office casualty lists will give the unit and record the date but again no location. They are on findmypast site.

    Hi,

The casualty lists for the 1st South Staffs June 1944 include your uncle, albeit with the incorrect initial (E). He is on the wounded list rather than killed, but with the date of death 12 June 1944, he would have perished during the march towards Mogaung town by 77 Brigade. The fight for Mogaung was one of the major engagements against the Japanese on Operation Thursday, the second Chindit expedition. I've included a pdf version of the page for you to download for your records:

Neither the name or service number have appeared here before this thread.

If you search online, using for example: "1st south staffs" + "chindits" site:ww2talk.com it will find threads here, for the string there a few threads. A few more if it is "chindit" and when it is "staffordshire" in full.

This will give your the broader context, not an individual's experience and death.

The 77 Brigade Head Quarters diary record his posting to the 1st South Staffs on 2nd May 1944, but I cannot find anything about his actual demise unfortunately:

    Hi Jenks20,

I hope the information given by the members above has clarified your uncle's Chindit credentials and confirmed his sad demise in Burma in June 1944. It would be great to see a photograph of him if the family have one they would be willing to share.

    Cheers now

Hiya Photo above of Iryl Price as we called him, he is commemorated at Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar Face 14 and also in Myddfai Church near LLandovery where he was born, even more prouder of him now if that is possible and will ensure the younger generation will always remember him, he died just 11 days before his 21st Birthday.

Thank you very much for the photo Jenks20, much appreciated. The commander of 77 Brigade (the 1st South Staff's Chindit unit) Michael Calvert wrote a book about their experiences in Burma. It is entitled Prisoners of Hope and is often available on Amazon and other book retailers websites. It would be worth reading as a way of understanding what Iryl went through in Burma during May/June 1944.

I don't know if you have ever seen his entry on Face 14 of the Rangoon Memorial at Taukkyan War Cemetery. Fortunately, I had a photograph of this from another South Staffs casualty, Howard Garfield Jones.

    Hello Sheila,

As an addition to all the information that you and the good folks above have put into this thread, you might like to have a look at a post from another thread (link below) which tells of The 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment as Chindits.
It's a broad overall view, but it does cover the period when your uncle Iryl was wounded and subsequently died.

    Always remember, never forget,

Thanks for pointing Sheila to the CS Operation Thursday narrative Jim, I should have thought of this myself. :)
