Did you know that Florence Nightingale is related to Major-General Gerald Harry George Lloyd-Verney DSO & Bar MVO, who commanded the 7th Armoured Division ("The Desert Rats") in NW Europe. This is through the marriage of her sister, Frances Parthenope Nightingale, to Verney’s paternal grandfather.

Florence and her sister were born in Italy and were named after the cities they were born in. Florence is straightforward to fathom, but Frances not so. Parthenope is the old Greek name for part of the city we now know as Naples.

Here are a few photographs of Verney’s battledress.
