This is to announce the death of Larry Canning ex RAF serving in Malta for a time and playing football for the RAF against all comers in the Mediterranian Theatre as an Aston Villa player in the late 40's and 50's and on retiring from Football took up a position with the BBC for many years commenting on all the Midland games.

A first class golfer he played off a plus two mark and I only played against him once - that was enough.

A truly nice guy who played with and against many of the best - Massie - Cummings - Waring - Ford - Blanchflower - Cullis- Wright and will be sadly missed

Sorry to hear of your brother's passing, Tom. It sounds like he lived a very full and rewarding life. How many appearences did he make for the Villa?

    Jonathan-
Hard to say as he signed professional forms in 1941 - went off to war in '43 - back in '47 until 1954 kept getting pushed around by people such as Ivor Powell - Danny Blanchflower - then when Trevor Ford went off he went in as a striker - centre forward in those days and enjoyed many tussles with his good friend Leslie Compton..of Arsenal he also played many rounds of Golf with his American friend Lee Trevino when he popped into the UK- and it was laughs all the way around the 18 holes - Larry had a good life so no complaints
    Cheers

Tom so sorry to hear of yet another loss to your family.

I can see a family resemblance from the photo in Cee's link.

to be sure and begorra - Diane 'tis the Ulster look of the Glanceys who sneaked into Scotland and married one of the fair Wallace's in the 1860's.....the Wallace clan hasn't been the same since !

2012 hasn't been that good to start off with two deaths already

    Thanks
    Tom
