A couple of Stalingrad specific questions

    Hi guys,

I am writing a screenplay based in Stalingrad and I have a couple of questions that you might be able to help me with.

    1. Chuikov's quote to his staff upon entering the city that they would need to "Pay with their lives, time is blood!" is something that I want to paint on building walls (like graffiti). Does anyone know whether this actually happened and can someone give me the translation for it? Ideally both the full translation and the much simpler... TIME IS BLOOD!

    2. I want to demonstrate the tactics that were used to demoralise the German soldiers. I know that loud speakers were used to taunt them and leaflets were probably dropped on them to inform that that both Manstein's Winter Storm offensive to break them out had failed and to inform Paulus that were he to surrender, his life and those of his men would be spared. Can someone give me SPECIFICS that I can use here? Actual wording used on the leaflets and the dates that these leaflets were dropped or the wording (if known) for the comments over the loudspeakers (I guess that's unlikely to exist so the gist of what was said would suffice)?

    3. A commander (Lieutenant General, I think) Hartmann, who died there on the 26th of January 43, is mentioned in my script. Can someone tell me where in the city he died and the circumstances? My understanding was that he stood right in front of the Russians and fired upon them until they cut him down (death by police, style).

    4. I mention too General Strecker's continued fight in the Northern pocket of the city. What was the activity of the men under his command at that time? My film opens with an assault on a factory but I can only imagine that nothing of the sort happened at this time. I'm petty sure that the last German assault in the city happened in 1942. I have set my story very late in January 1943 and though I want to be accurate I want to show German men still actively fighting in the factory district. Can someone give me a factory related battle date that I could attach my action to?

Thanks for any help you guys can give. You have all proved brilliant up to now!

On the morning of 26th Jan 1943 three Generals of IV AK - General der Artillerie Max Pfeffer, K.G. IV.AK General der Infanterie Alexander von Hartmann, and Generalmajor Ulrich Vasoll were standing on the Zariza Railway Embankment shooting at the Soviets. General Hartmann was shot and killed, whilst the two others were taken prisoner.

    Hope that helps... :) ...

Thanks Blacksnake, that's great! Am really struggling to find that railway embankment on any maps! Know where it was in the city?

Anyone read this book? It may help me resolve question 4.
