    Commander of the British Empire
Major-General G.P.B. Roberts DSO, MC assumed command of 11 Armoured Division in December 1943. He at once threw himself with the greatest energy into preparing his Division for war and worked untiringly to this end for the six months before the invasion of Europe took place.

That he succeeded in his task is amply prove by the outstanding success of his Division in battle. During the advance to the ODON, in the breakthrough East of CAEN and again in the breakout at CAUMONT, General Robert's Division fought with the greatest verve and skill in country much of which was quite unsuited to armoured warfare.

That his Division fought so well I attribute largely to General Roberts, who by his skill in planning, his enthusiasm and outstanding command in battle so inspired his officers and men that they could not fail.

    WO 373/146/243

    Legion of Honour (Officier)

General ROBERTS has commanded the 11th Armoured Division throughout the campaign in FRANCE. During the whole of this period he has displayed great qualities of courage and leadership and is in large part responsible for the successful results achieved by this formation. In the dash across the SEINE to the BELGIAN frontier he was in the vanguard of the advance, and exploited every situation to the best possible advantage. The part he played in clearing NORTHERN FRANCE of the Germans was of the greatest value to the Allies cause.
