Helloo, i am pretty new to this but i wonder if anyone can help me, im am trying to find out any information about my great grand uncle who died at Dunkirk, he was in the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, his name was Harry Hill he died may 30th 1940 at Dunkirk, his service number was 2614938 he was 22 years old and recently married when he was killed, i have his service records but they are very brief, any help to find any other information would be much appreciated.
Welcome, Ancestorgirl. The places to start are: 1) The unit/regimental histories, and for the Grenadiers in WWII I am sure there must be several of those. 2) The unit war diary for the relevant dates. Good libraries (IWM, British Library, etc) will have the histories. For the war diaries you can either go to the Public Record Office (PRO) at Kew yourself or ask/pay someone to copy them for you. Andy on this forum (Drew5233) has copied a lot of them. I should warn you, though, that unless he was an officer or a key/senior NCO your ancestor's death is not likely to be mentioned specifically in the war diary. However, the diary will tell you what the unit was doing on that day and enable you to pinpoint the place and circumstances of his death. I would also check with the regimental museum and/or any old comrades' association.
