    Thanks DBF, very much appreciated.

I am in the process of trying to track the movements of my Grandad up until his death, 12 Aug 44. We know he was 1st Bn GG and apparently he was buried between 2 Irish guards, although in an unknown grave.

I hope to take my son on a bit of a lads adventure to retrace his Great Grandads footsteps as much as possible. As such any advice on resources that might help in building this mini battlefield tour would be greatly appreciated.

I have some photographs which I will upload once I relocate them, recently moved house.

Hello. If you haven't already got a copy of the GG History, there's a link in post 1 to online version The History includes some sketch maps along with the regimental overview of the campaign in Normandy.

For a more detailed day-to-day account, specifically of the battalion, you should try to get a copy of the war diary. These are held at TNA, Kew. Afraid I don't have copies but if you are willing or able you can go to Kew yourself. Other forum members might have them already or could get copies for you at a rate much lower than TNA services.

See this link for 1st Bn war diary references:

Quite often the most useful information in war diaries regarding positions & routes isn't the daily entries but in the Appendices. Here's a general info link in case you aren't already familiar with contents of war diaries.

Have you applied for copy of your grandfather's Service Records? These should confirm his service history within the regiment if you aren't certain he spent his entire time with 1GG.
Hope that helps a little. Good luck with your research and with the trip.

Thanks again, I managed to get his records a couple of years ago, although I forgot to make a copy and they are currently with my aunt. My cousin is going to send me a digitalised version.

Thanks for the links above, if there isn't anyone that currently has the war diaries I think I will look to get down to Kew and get copies of the relevant bits.

Will put an update in here when I get underway.

Grandad is rear row, 3rd from the left. One of the pictures has taken at Pirbright written in pencil on the back, so I suspect all were taken around that time.

Company Photograph, again likely in Pirbright. Having zoomed in I believe Grandad is rear row, 1st man on the left.

Hope it might align to a copy in the guards archive to see if we can identify the company and other names.

Looks like PT/a stroll around the training area. Grandad is 3rd from the left.

Probably my favourite, looks like a Section photo. Grandad is in the middle (clearly not fully embracing Guards life as he hasn't got a hat on!!). It would be awesome to put some names to faces.

He was KIA as the driver of a Bren Gun carrier as it went over a mine somewhere in Normandy 12 Aug 44.

Thanks for adding those photos; I also like the image in post above the best. Fingers crossed someone will eventually recognise a relative and maybe supply some extra info. (Be sure to activate your Notifications via your account. From personal experience, it's not unusual for a reply from an interested party to appear years later.)

When you get an opportunity to check his records, would mind please adding his enlistment date? (I put them on nominal roll to help others who are awaiting records. Currently the Grenadier Nominal roll fewer annotations than eg WG or IG but I have quite a few updates to add to it, some time this year.)

Nan was told that Eddie was buried between 2 Irish Guards, but sadly it isn't a marked grave.
