    Re. Captain S.H. Atkins, RAChD

There only appears to be a single mention of Captain S.H.Atkins, RAChD in the 24th Lancers' War Diary...

13/11/42 Capt.S.H.Atkins, RAChD was posted to the Regiment and commenced duties as Chaplain.

The War Diary does not mention the date on which he left, however the Reverend Mark Green came to the 24th L on 3rd June 1943, so S.H.Atkins possibly left the 24th L in mid 1943.

There are a couple of mentions of a S.H.Atkins serving with the Suffolk Regiment in the 1930's... but with no mention of RAChD it could be merely a coincidental name and unfortunately in those references there is no given Army service number to use for further searches....

    THE LONDON GAZETTE, 9 JUNE, 1933 p3876
Suffolk R.— Capt. A.C. French is seconded for service on the Staff. 23rd May 1933. Lt. S. H. Atkins to be Capt. 23rd May 1933.

    THE LONDON GAZETTE, 27 NOVEMBER, 1936 p7645
Suffolk R.— Capt. S. H. Atkins is seconded for service as Adjt., Aux. Forces, India. 29th Oct. 1936.

Hmmm Capt Phillimore is a bit of a mystery.

Extract from Geoff Bishop's memoirs (July 20 1944):

    Phillimore_01.jpg

    and July 22nd:

    Phillimore_02.jpg

(you can safely ignore the spelling)

    and from the War Diary:

    "Aug 6
03.00 hours. "A" and "B" Squadrons withdraw to harbour La Barbiere, 6938.
15:00 hours. RHQ move to La Barbiere.
16:00 hours. Enemy begin to counter-attack the Le Bas Perrier position.
Beaten off by "C" Squadron and Lieut Robson and 3 x Other Ranks killed in action.
Captain Phillimore, 2/Lieut Treanor, Captain Crouch and 9 x Other Ranks wounded with 2 x Other Ranks missing."

The British Army Casualty List has Capt JHB Phillimore wounded on Aug 7th, but with the 9th Lancers.

    Go figure!

added: Sorry, should have mentioned - Geoff Bishop was in C Sqr, 23H and the War Diary is 23H too.

If you read the obituary of Henry Otho Daniel THWAITES, another 9th Lancer that joined the 24th Lancers at their inception Nov/Dec 1940, there are perhaps some further clues.

    See... 9th-Lancers_1954_0047.jpg - 9th/12th Royal Lancers Museum

Regimentally there were still strong connections between the Lancer Regiments and in the instance of Robert Arbuthnot, for example 9th Lancers on his Normandy grave.

See... 24th Lancers - Roll of Honour

    Similarly Fitzhugh...

Re. Robert Michael Fitzhugh - 47563
28.09.1910 Wrexham district, Denbighshire - 14.01.2006 Overton, Wrexham, Denbighshire
Led "B" Squadron of the 24th Lancers, prior to Roy Bennett...
    British Army Officers 1939-1945 -- F
Interestingly, no mention of the 24th Lancers... though...
    2nd Lt. 28.08.1930 [47563]
    Lt. 28.08.1933
    Capt. 28.08.1938

    Maj. 01.07.1946 (retd 29.09.1953)
    T/Lt.Col. (1949)
    Hon. Lt.Col. 29.09.1953
Mention in Despatches MID 08.11.1945 NW Europe
Mention in Despatches MID 07.01.1949 Palestine 03.48-06.48
Education: Eton (...-1928); Royal Military College, Sandhurst (01.02.1929-1930).
    28.08.1930 commissioned, 17th/21st Lancers
19.06.1939 - 06.09.1939 employed with Mechanical Car Depot
    1939 - 1945 served with 17th/21st Lancers (UK & 29th Armoured Brigade, France, Belgium & Germany) (despatches)
    1947 - 1948 served in Palestine (despatches)
29.09.1953 - 29.04.1961 Regular Army Reserve of Officers [exceeded age limit]
Deputy Lieutenant (DL) 1966, High Sheriff Flintshire, 1960.

    Looking here...

The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeths' Own) Association – Looking after our Lancers Always

The Royal Lancers Association is set up to help any past and serving members, their wives, widows and dependents of the 5L, 9L, 12L, 16L, 17L, 21L, 24L 27L, 17/21L, 16/5L, 9/12L, QRL and RL.

(Although there ought perhaps ;-) to be a comma between 24L and 27L :) )

Edit : and incidentally re. Fillimore, given the number of admirals in his near family I was wondering a bit why he didn't perhaps take up a naval career.

    See... Person Page

Curiously, finding actual photos - of particularly - many of these very "early" Officers of the 24th Lancers - is still quite puzzling. Even places where one might expect them, such as obituaries etc. can come-up lacking. There is a grainy picture, in profile of Otto Thwaites in "None Had Lances" p226, similarly Fitzhugh (in a "B" Squadron 24th L group) on p34 of NHL - but they aren't exactly the most detailed of identifiers, so the hunt for what they actually really looked like will continue ;-) "immaculate" descriptions of them asides :)

Edit #2 - A good part of the reason for looking for some good photos is also - just in case - some of them might perhaps be further identifiable in the later pictures of the Old Comrades of the 24th Lancers etc... The "Old Comrades" of the 24L...

    Re. Captain J. Foy

    (Ex 24th Lancer)

    One possibility perhaps - London Gazette - a "J.Foy" - 104939, or a "William James FOY - 76420.

Can't really see anything obvious at the mo.

Neither shown prior to D-Day or subsequently in the 24th L Nominal roll at disbandment.
