I am researching this unit for a friend's father who was in it.He was a loader for an 88mm when his unit was overran by Russian tanks. 2/SS Flak Abtl. 4 is the 2nd SS Anti-aircraft Battalion, 4th Company, right? If so, then they were part of the 2nd SS Panzer Division. However, the father has stated that he was trained by the Tokenkoff division.
2./SS-Flak-Abteilung 4 is the 2nd Battery in SS-Flak-Btl 4 which was part of 4.SS-Polizei-Panzergrenadier-Division. Lexikon der Wehrmacht - SS-Polizei-Panzer-Grenadier-Division The history of the 4th SS-Polizei-Division is covered in 2 volumes: In Good Faith (ISBN's: 978-0921991748 and 978-0921991960). It is possible that he was trained in one of the Totenkopf training units before being assigned to a different SS unit.
If your friend contacts the Deutsche Dienstelle then they will provide him with his father's service history so you'll know all the units he served in. They do take a while though to respond. Even better if your friend has his father's Soldbuch and/or Wehrpass.
Thanks, but his father's 80,000 memoir does the trick. Now that I know the name I am trying to find out more about this unit. I found a book: SS-Artillerie-Regiment 4, SS-Polizei-Division: A Study of German Artillery, which it says also includes the flak unit.
John S, I have that book and you should be aware that it is only 54 pages long and is mainly a photo book, the info on the FlaK Abt is only half a page and just covers the basic organisation of the Abt. You will find more info in the book Die Flugabwehrverbande der Waffen SS: Aufstellung, Gliederung, Luftverteidigung und Einsatze an den Fronten by Hans Stober. The section on 4.FlaK Abt. covers 8 pages and gives a brief history along with info on Feldpostnummern, officer positions for each year of the war, aothorized manpower levels etc.
