I don't know if the word was used in UK forces but sure was widely used but US ones and is in every WWII Hollywood movie ever made.

Here is a question that I have never had a satisfactory answer to. When they built the London Underground how did they get the trains down the escalators?
It is easy to get them to go down the escalator. The hard part is getting them to come back up when they are all worn out.
