    Great 4 part mini series/ docu drama... just watched this again and it really gives you the sense of panic and bewilderment that must have been overwhelming at Dunkirk and the collapsing perimeter. Good recognition given to the rear guard units as well as the actual evacuation, the re-enactment of the action in which Lt Jimmy Langly of the Coldstream Gurads won his MC is particularly well done. On a whole I'd have to give this series full marks...very watchable.

    Watchable yes - but a lot of people would disagree with you for two reasons;

    1/ the BBC(or whoever made this for the BBC) got round the necessity for major production values by simply employing VERY tight camera angles - you don't actually see any great reconstructed open vistas. Look for example of Bill Tennat's arrival in Dunkirk; as he winds his way through the chaotic town you don't actually SEE any chaos! Because the camera is tightly focused on JUST him and those with him. Typical of the series; it covers the ground...but you don't SEE the ground!

    2/ the SOUNDTRACK...and this was the one thing that REALLY got on my t1ts...did you notice something? The BBC went for a very iconic cound of war - MODERN war....the entire series is filled with more helicopter-like "chop" than Apocalypse Now! Okay, I KNOW it's supposed to trigger the emotions of TODAY'S generation....but it just didn't fit the programme at all, totally anachronistic.

    Imo Tobruk is a very good and deeply impressive film - there isn't so much action but somehow I had the feeling that it gets closer to what war is like than other films. Watch it if you get the chance!

    I just finished watching the 11 disk collectors edition of World at War put out by the BBC. Excellent series, and well worth the price. There were a few section which were duplicates of themselves, but in context they made sense.

    Some of the interviews with the last people in the bunker with Hitler were apropos in more than one place, like Trude Junge's contributions.

    I sat and watched "Ice Cold in Alexs" yesterday aftenoon, I really like the old B&W war films, However I did notice a glearing mistake when they went to get petrol from a British fuel dump they used "Jerry Cans" and not the British petrol tins which was the standard issue in that period.

    Just watched Tobruk, quite dark and broody as most reviews said, but a good war film nonetheless, the weapons, uniforms and vehicles were spot on, always a good thing!

    Just had "Theirs is the Glory" delivered dispite the Postal Strike, I sat down this afternoon and watched it.

  11. Sea of Sand...Richard Attenborough, John Gregson etc.
    Standard LRDG story ruined by several silly mistakes; Afrika Korps using Brens & Stens and driving American half-tracks for instance.
    It was common for each side to use captured vehicles and other materiel. So the scene which generated the comment could, in real time, actually have been factually correct.

    Watched "Good" the other day, starring Viggo Mortensen and Jason Isaacs. They both do a great job. A very good movie that I would recommend watching.

    Here's from imdb:

    "John Halder is a 'good' and decent individual with family problems: a neurotic wife, two demanding children and a mother suffering from senile dementia. A literary professor, Halder explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Seemingly inconsequential decisions lead to choices, which lead to more choices... with eventually devastating effect."

    Just watched this film:
    A bit long and can be complicated to follow with the subtitles but still quite good none the less. The film contains some rather graphic original propaganda footage from the Germans and Russians.

    What I did enjoy was the post war part of the film set in Poland showing how the Russians suppressed the truth.
