Here is a propaganda film showing Berlin in 1936. Its fascinating to see the Pre-war city in color. Brings it home that it wasnt that long ago: YouTube - 1936 Nazi Color Film-Berlin in the Year of the Olympic Games It is a propaganda film but the footage makes it interesting nonetheless.
You're right , it does make it seem that much closer in history. I've driven on those very roads too!
There's quite a bit available in relation to color footage of pre-war Germany. Its interesting to see images of pre-war Berlin and then looking at post-war to get some sort of effect of the Bombing and Russian attacks.
A very good find , Hitler said something about giving him 10 years and you would not recognise Germany - - nine years on and who would recognise the Berlin of 1945 ? The bronzes seen at approx. one minute - the French took them to Paris in 1945 and returned them a few years ago, they are now back in place. It somehow seems odd that the Germans should have double decker buses....they are an icon of England / London !

Ah the Cream Buses, the very ones that were used to bus thousands of Volksturm out of the City on Goebbels orders towards the Oder and the Russians. Where they died in their thousands.
I think they are either Bussing or Mercedes Doppelstockbus D3something. Thought they were D38 but as film was from 1936 I don't think it was. As that film is 1936 the buses will be these. At about 6:24 in the film, it shows a building site in front of the Reichstag. i wonder if that was the site for the New Reich chancellery? Amazing to see how Goering's Air Ministry hasnt changed one bit - given the size of it you'd think that it would have incurred more damage than actually did happen to it. good call on the Bus pics Owen. Seemingly they are very famous in Germany, those cream buses.
Heres another video showing the city in 1934. YouTube - BERLIN 1934. I've no sound at the mo so dont know the context of this but still interesting views of the city.
