I would suggest the 11th or 12th December 1941, but early to mid December 1941 - Royal Navy, China Station, December 1941 to March 1942, Admiral Layton's Diary

    Tuesday 9th December 1941
Japanese invasion of North West Malaya commenced. Royal Air Force ordered demolition and evacuated of Alor Star aerodrome

    Friday 12th December 1941
    Military
Enemy attacks, mainly East of road from Singapore to Alor Star, on 11th Division, drove in right flank and led to withdrawal to line of Sungei Sukit just North of Alor Star. Enemy attacked KROH column in strength and drove it back to the frontier. Situation confused. Tanks and light artillery in action and position giving rise to some anxiety as position in North Kedah was threatened

I'm no expert but who knows one may be along soon to confirm or deny

Where did this information come from? I can find no evidence that such an event occurred (but that could just be me). The only battleships it could have been are Revenge or Royal Sovereign but their movements do not go anywhere near Malaya. Indeed after the sinking of Repulse and Prince of Wales it would have been foolhardy and hazardous for these ships to go anywhere that the Japanese had air superiority. There is nothing in the Admiralty War Diaries for the East Indies and Eastern Fleets that show this event taking place.

Your quite correct Timuk, this is a what if, or alternative history idea I am exploring.
