Thanks to Jedburgh, I now have several hundred documents related to the Far East, mainly. Can anyone explain why there would be a copy of a leaflet about astrology in the file? There are a few gems but sadly little that I was looking for.
Sounds intriguing zahonado! In what file was this found? I once found a paper on superstitions amongst Gurkha troops in Burma, these included astrological alignments and so on. I think it was the 3/9 GR's. I'll see if I can locate it and re-read.
SOE D/Q section was using an astrologer in India to produce anti-Axis and pro-Allied predictions. The astrologer wrote and published the booklet you're referring to and also publicised himself in the press offering to cast people's horoscopes. Probably an extension of an earlier SOE astrologer scheme using the infamous Louis de Wohl. There's a lot about Louis de Wohl in my book 'The Black Art' but I didn't include anything about the Indian astrologer as it was outside the remit of the book. Lee
Yes how extraordinary it seems to do this .... Will try and get a pic up if I can remember how. There is a picture of a little antique object...I wonder if it was used to carry secret info.... More worrying is the part referring to the need to employ photographers with imagination to make false atrocity pictures to be distributed. Weren't there enough going on already I ask? There are descriptions of what the IFBUs were doing in 43/44 but not in 45 which is when I wanted. Oh well!
I don't recall fake atrocity photographs but a series of leaflets produced from staged pornographic photographs were produced. This is the brief mention from "The Black Art":
From a quick read they were going to be done in Canada! And definitely atrocities not pornography. Will have another look as it may be this idea was not actually carried through. What your piece shows is that women always get exploited by either side....
Interesting documents Zahonado, does the correspondence reveal whether the idea was carried out? Do you have the HS file reference for the document these come from?
Hi psywar, I did not do more than glance at this stuff, so there may be more that I didn't find. The file no is HS1 333. What was astonishing is the amount of personal recommendation that goes on in these documents along the lines of he is a jolly good chap etc. But Canada seems rather a long way to go...maybe the names mentioned will lead to more...not my area though!
