American subs in the Pacific war. Excellent graphics and you can run a sub for the entire war, or take on individual missions. At subsim.com you can access modifications to make original game even more historically accurate. Thoroughly recommended. I refused to play SH3 as it was a U Boat simulation and I will not sink my own side.

Top rate pc specs recommended. I run mine on a quad core 3gb ram, with Geforce 9400 GS 1gb ram video card, its like watching tv!! :p

    Mike,

With a spec like that I am not surprised. It makes my computer appear to be steam driven.:D

I refused to go out and by it when it first came out as it was only a year after number 3

However instead of shopping at Asda this week we are going to Morrisons who have it in their bargain section at £6......thats more like it:D:rolleyes:;)

That last screenshot looks awesome! However I suspect my Geforce 7950 will not be able to handle this kind of game!

The Video will possibly but your ram and processor need to be high. The water is VERY fluid, hence large spec

Here is a naughty fishing boat off the south coast of Honshu. Sank him 5 mins ago with deck gun. 0515 hrs and stormy. When you have rain squalls its great because you can approach a convoy on surface with radar and sink a few before any destroyer finds you.

Histrorically correct. I found myself not far from Midway, heading for Japan when word came through of a task force north west of Midway, full speed and I got there in time to sink FOUR carriers!!! It was the approaching Task Force for the battle of Midway.

I have mine set on realistic

I tried to make a video of the action of the sub sailing the waters but WM Maker only saves in some crap unrecognised format.

Try this: YouTube - drum 1.AVI USS Drum rides the rollers off Japan

YouTube - drum2.AVI Standing on the bridge riding the storm

Looks like a decent game. Was never a fan of sub games to be honest but those pics look beautiful. Thanks for posting RD!

Unless you have a AA gunner with over 90+ gun skill, if you see a plane dive straight away, those bombs rarely hit but can cause flooding. I have a 100+ gunner who destroys most of what he shoots at. The nearer you get to bases, the more frequent are air patrols, especially around Japan itself. Game spec states min requirement as:

    XP or Vista
    Pentium 4.2GHZ or Athlon
    1GB RAM
Video: DirectX compliant; 128mb on card RAM 256 or more strongly recommended (Mine is 1GB on board RAM)
    DVD drive 4x or higher
    HDD 6GB

Supported Video cards at time of release:

    ATI Radeon 9600/9700/9800, X350 thro X850, X1300 thro X1800
Nvidia GeForce 6200/6600/7800 (remember this is minimum, mine is 9600 GS)

Laptop models may well work but not supported

I have acted this game many times now and am pretty au fait with destroyer tactics within game parameters. What I do hate is that they can be damn accurate over a long distance with their turrets!! They are easily lost underwater telling me that their asdic operators are not clued up. If under attack, crash dive (the more you practise early on, the quicker they become, initially its a damn slow dive), take her down but reduce speed from flank to dead slow (1) as soon as possible and take let her drop. As soon as operator reports passing thermal layer increase to slow (2) and do a sharp turn left or right and actually head back towards destroyer but off to one side, he thinks you are still on dived course. The depth charges may come close but not enough to hit or cause damage. (In real life a depth charge had to be alomost on the sub to cause major/fatal damage). Later subs such as Balao can go deep enough to maybe pass another thermal layer, if you can go below 300, you can open her up to standard (3) and get away that much quicker. KEEP your eyes on battery levels.

As soon as you have 'lost' him, keep on same speed but vary your route of escape and try and keep beneath thermal layer. This acts as a solid water barrier between you and the asdic (sonar). If you try to outrun at speed him he will detect you. My tactic at this point, once I have 'lost' them is to sneak back up and try another pot at a target. As soon as torp fired, I go back down - quick!!

There is a mod manager availalbe free from www.subsim.com called JSME which takes downloaded mods and allows you to activate them, or deactivate. The web site is jam packed full of images, posts, ideas, mods, suggestions, in fact a whole virtual galactic encyclopedia of information. At the time of typing this there appears to be a problem with the site there. Very unusual unless they are upgrading.

JoneSoft Homepage to see the mod enabler.

anyhing else, feel free to ask. There are zero cheats, so you have to learn, maybe the hard way ;)
