From pg 126 of Chorley's "Bomber Command Losses, Vol 8, Heavy Conversion Units and Miscellaneous Units, 1939 - 1947"

No. 1660 HCU Stirling III EH978

    F/O JB Josling DFC +
    F/Lt AL Ray RNZAF +
    Sgt ASA Johnson +
    Sgt N Fox +
    Sgt GW Holford +
    F/O HJ Bennett +
    Sgt HS Buckley +
    Sgt J Mitchison +
    Sgt RW Parker +

T/o 0040 Swinderby for a night exercise but hit an oak tree and lost the port tail plane and elevator. With the Stirling perilously unstable F/O Josling made a desperate effort to land straight ahead at nearby Winthorpe, only to be baulked at the last moment by an aircraft on the runway. Seconds later, he lost the last remaining vestiges of control and crashed near the airfield.
