I am trying to decipher my Grandads WW2 war records. They are confusing me as in the column which says where he was e.g. UK, it then says CMF - which I have found means Central Mediterranean Forces. It says that for 3 months, then it says AAI - Allied forces Italy. I know he fought in Italy, so was there, but where it says CMF could he have still been in the UK being mobilised perhaps? He was also then TOS X List, then SOS - so injured/unwell. Also, was there a Canadian General Hospital (permanent hospital) in Italy? Or would that have been in the UK? Many thanks in advance for any help.
CMF was Central Mediterranean Force the name given to 15th Army Group it was later renamed Allied Armies Italy. TOS X List is Taken On Strength X List which was (from memory) the reserve list from which he would be transferred elsewhere. SOS is Struck Off Strength i.e taken off the list and sent to a new location i.e. when fit. He would reappear TOS Taken On Strength where ever he was posted to. I dont know ref Canadian General Hospital.
Trottier, just sent you a PM. I do research for Canadian soldiers for people (all free) so I can help you with all your record questions and any other question you may have.
