On December 7, 1941 as the Japanese attacked B-17s were trying to land from California.

It was stated they did not have their machine guns, they were finally allowed to take them along. However they were all in packing materials and grease. The B-17 had no way of defending themselves and landed at various location in Hawaii, one on a gulf course I believe.

This are the papers their Commander was carrying for their mission to the Philippines.

This link will take you to the story of their machine guns still in packing materials.
