My great grandfather was in the 1st Loyal Regiment, but was captured there by the Germans and sent to Stalag VIII-C. Basically i'm just wanting informaion of the camp, the regiment, and if anyone knows someone who was also captured at Anzio.

I have a picture of him in italy (judging by the italian name on the shop in the background "G.SGUEGLIA") after being captured, http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/album.p...pictureid=3471

    Hi.

I saw your post on the ww2talk website.

I run battlefield tours to Anzio and have studied the actions of 1 LOYALS in some detail: in the early part of the landings when they were on the right flank of the 1 Inf Div advance towards Campoleone and then when they fought the pitched battles around the 'Flyover' on the Allies' Final Defensive Line.

If you ever wish to go and see exactly what your great grandfather did at Anzio, do get in touch. 1 LOYALS played a major part in stopping the massive German onslaught in Feb 44 and, in doing so, lost a lot of men killed, wounded and captured.

    Regards

    Worthatron,

My grandad was captured at Anzio as well. He was with 2 RSF. He was interred at Stalag VB and Stalag VIIA; Stalag VIIA was liberated by US Forces in April 1945.

    Good luck with your research.

Never heard about "G. Sgueglia".. In my mind, this was a surname, probably on the facade of a shop, somewhere.

The 1st Loyals were part of 2nd Brigade, 1st Division. The Loyals were in the Anzio beachhead from the beginning, but they saw their heaviest combat on 18-19 February 1944. At that time, the battalion was just east of the center of the Allied position along a lateral road the Loyals called "Wigan Street." The troops of the US 45th Division lay just to the Loyals' left, defending a road bridge called "The Flyover." The Loyals were heavily attacked by the crack German Lehr Regiment and 1st Panzer Grenadiers, who came near to a breakthrough. One entire company of the Loyals and parts of two others were overrun, but with help from 6th Gordons and 46th RTR the remaining Loyals just held on and inflicted hundreds of casualties on the Germans. The unit lost heavily too. Your great-grandfather's records would tell you, but its likely that he was captured on or about 18th-19th February. Historian Carlo d'Este is not a quick man with praise, but he refers to the 1st Loyals at Anzio as "this gallant battalion."

    Hi Worthatron
Just to let you know that I have read your request asking whether anyone else relative was captured at Anzio.
My grandfather was captured at Anzio whilst serving 5th Battalion, Grenadier Guards, 9th February 1944. He was sent to Stalag XIA.
I have recently posted photos etc on the website so if you take a look then you may find some info that interests you.
    Regards

    Hi worthatron,

I have been researching the family tree for both my wife and I and have found that my wife is distantly related to a Norman Antcliffe.

From my research Samuel Antcliffe appears to be Norman's Great Grandfather. Samuel appears to be my wife's Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather so you guys may be very distantly related if what we've found is correct.

I thought you might appreciate the connection. If you would like more information on this let me know.

    All the best,

    Rich
