    7945789 Kenneth RILEY 48th RTR
Awarded the Military Medal, London Gazette 13 December 1945
His Citation reads "Trooper Riley was the driver of the Humber scout car permanently attached to A squadron 48th Royal Tank Regiment from the beginning of December 1944 until the middle of April 1945 when he was wounded. On the 18th December 1944 A squadron together with the 2/8th Royal Gurkha Rifles were ordered to clear the North part of Faenza and the railway station. The enemy was holding this area strongly and any movement drew fire immediately. The squadron Recconnaisance, officer whose vehice the scout car was, left the car outside the infantry headquarters when he went in to report progress. his exit from headquarters unluckily coincided with a heavy concentration of mortar fire. Captain Wife, the Recconnaisance officer, was wounded and unable to move. Trooper Riley immediately got out of his vehicle where he was on wireless watch and carried Captain Wife to safety. He then returned to his car and acted as Reconnaisance officer, taking and passing all messages between tanks and infantry himself, until relieved after about an hour by another officer. The maintainance of this essential link at this time was vital and had he failed in this duty the results might well have been serious.
On the 6th March 1945 a troop of tanks from A squadron was detailed to support the 1st Jaipur Infantry in a two company raid on R Senio opposite Lugo. The reconnaisance officer with Trooper Riley and hsi scout car were placed at an advanced Infantry Headquarters specifically set up for the occasion. The enemy reacted vigourously to the attack and called down his defensive fire targets repeatedly. many rounds fell in the Infantry Headquarters area. The scout car was hit by fragments and the remote control leads cut. Trooper Riley promptly left the building, found the break and mended it. This he did on two occasions with shells, mortar bombs falling all aroind the area. His prompt and courageous action ensured the maintainance of communications between the tanks and infantry which had they failed would certainly have jeopardised the whole action.
When the Senio was finally crossed Trooper Rileys car was one of the first over. Later after the Sanfarno (?) had been secured, two troops of A squadron were detached and placed under command of 1st C.D.O Brigade. Captain Liddell was put in charge of the party and as tanks were short, he used Trooper Rileys scout car as a command vehicle. It was necessary for this light armoured vehicle to operate right up with the actual tanks and on mined areas that had not been swept. After about three days of this work the car was blown up on a mine and Trooper Riley was wounded and evacuated.
The initiative, skill and courage of this soldier is most commendable and contributed greatly to the succesful completion of many actions"

3602025 Richard Albert BURTON 2nd London Irish, 6th Armoured Division
Awarded the Military Medal, London Gazette 4 May 1943
his citation reads " During the Battle for the high ground North of Bou Arada on the 26th Feb 1943, the platoon to which Rfn Burton belongs was surrounded by the enemy. Under very heavy enemy fire Rfn Burton broke through the enemy position and made his way to Company HQ. During the course of the battle, on his own initiative, he prepared tea and food and carried it under fire to the forward platoons. To do this it was necessary for him to make several journeys to and fro. His outstanding fearlessness was a great example to the remainder of the Company"

3913773 Edward Vivian CROCKER, 6th South Wales Borderers, 36th Division
Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette 20 March 1945
His Citation reads "N BURMA CAMPAIGN 1944. On 16 Nov 44 during the operations fought N of Pinwe around the Gyobin Chaung, CQMS Crokers coy together with another coy were cut off by enemy infiltration in rear. A strong patrol from another coy led by the coy comd had managed to fight their way through to the isolated coys with ammunition. When the patrol began their return journey, the coy comd was seriously wounded about a hundred yards outside teh coy perimeter. CQMS Croker left the perimeter and attempted to bring in teh wounded officer, but was unable to reach him owing to intense MMG fire, and was seriously wounded in the attempt. In spite of this, he organised a rescue party and again went forward attacking the MMG post with grenades and TSMG himself, while the rest of the party tried to reach the officer, but once again he and his party were beaten off. Although greatly weakened by his wounds, CQMS Croker made a third attempt and charging the MMG armed with grenades and TSMG he succeded in killing all the occupants. Meanwhile the rescue party had been forced back by another MMG post which suddeny opened up from a flank. CQMS Croker although he was nwo alone, worked his way forward to teh wounded coy comd and succeded in carrying him to safety whilst under intense MMG fire. By his devotion to duty and superb courage CQMS Croker, in spite of his wounds, succeded in destroyin the enemy strong point and saving the life of the coy comd"

6106075 Henry Albert TIPPLE, 4th Somerset Light Infantry, 43rd Division.
Private Tipple gets mentions in Sydney Jary's excellent book "18 Platoon" which has the following:
" behind us in the column a Panther Tank and a self-propelled gun got within twenty-five yards of the column. Private Tipple of the Battlions Carrier platoon engaged the tank with a PIAT. In a one-man-versus-tank engagement Private Tipple, although bruised and badly shaken after being fired at with high explosive shells, won the day. Hit but not knocked out, the Panther limped away. A well deserved Military Medal was Private Tipple's reward"
    His official citation reads:
"On 11 Fev 45 the Carrier Pl were in CLEVE when their posn was attacked by a Panther, an SP gun and some infantry. The Panther came to within 25 Yards of the pl's posns and the situation of the pl began to look desperate. Pte Tipple armed with a PIAT took up a posn on the lip of a bomb crater but before he could bring his weapon into actiopn the tank spotted him and fired a round of HE at point blank range, blew Pte Tipple and his PIAt to the bottom of the crater. Undettered Pte Tipple with great courage crawled once again to the lip of the crater taking up another fire posn, engaging the tank and scoring direct hits. Unfortunately he was unable to knock the tank out but the blast effect of the bombs on the hull of the tank so discomforted it that it beat a hasty retreat and was not seen again.
it is quite certain that this private soldier by his brave action and disregard for his own safety was responsible for saving the lives of many of his comrades"
