I just finished watching this YouTube video on the 51st Highland Division during the Dunkirk Campaign. Does anyone have book recommendations on the 51st Highland Division during this time period? I am particularly interested in veteran accounts.
Hallo, Thank you so much for sharing the Youtube video; this was new to me You may want to have a quick look at a tread dedicated to Saint-Valery-en-Caux. Some British, French and German accounts have already been shared which might be of interest to you. Kind Regards, Christian
I have two great uncles who were in Dunkirk and made it back to then go to the dday landings. They were both Scottish so not sure how they got back. Wonder how to find out. Saw the documentary through. Poor men left behind.
That is indeed a possibility. However, if I remember correctly, there was also a Scottish battalion (1/KOSB) that was engaged in rearguard action on the Dunkirk defence perimeter. Eve's two grand uncles could have been part of that unit.
Hi My two great uncles were in Dunkirk 51st (Lowland) Heavy Regiment fighting alongside BEF. And got home via Operation Dynamo. Hope that helps.
Probably the same unit as referred to here. According to this source, the 51st HA Regt. took part in the advance to the River Dyle. The 'History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery - The Years of Defeat 1939-41' provides an nice overview of RA-units positioned behind the Dyle. I was, however, unable to find the 51st amongst them... very puzzling. The same source, however, shows two batteries (215/51 and 240/51) near Abbeville in early June (?) This would surely warrants some deeper digging.
Yes I do have their service numbers and when they enlisted, They were both gunners also. One uncle died in France afterwards by friendly fire. I'll have a look
