Hello all, not sure if anyone will actually know the answer to this.... were stars and defence/war medals named when they were issued to Czech RAF personal. has anybody seen Czech RAF medals to answer this? I know South African and Australian medals were named and i know British ones could be named privately. But were British service medals issued to Czechs named?
As you say Adam, I can't categorically answer this question. But on investigation and looking through a well known dealers auction archive, they seem to have been issued unnamed. Here is an example for you: http://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/catalogue-archive/lot.php?department=Medals&lot_id=7573 And here is a search engine for some more awards to Czech personnel, none of which have named British awards. http://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/catalogue-archive/results.php?dept=Medals&category=&keywords=czech&date_on=&date_start=&date_end=&lot_no=&action=Search&offset=72&limit=24 NB. Not all the men shown on the above page are RAF. Steve
Thanks for the links, the 'all unnamed as issued' in the first link see conclusive. I have a War Medal to a czech pilot, which is named with number, initial and surname. I assume it must have been was privately named.
Hi Adam If memory serves, when we received my fathers medals and I believe most other 'general' medals of WW2 they were sent unnamed, there were stores (I think Boots was one) that at the time would engrave them for free. TD
Yes, I would say so. I have, I think, three examples of privately named Burma Star groups in my collection. Some will say the naming means nothing in terms provenance, but with some matching paperwork alongside, I would disagree. Best wishes Steve
Thanks for the responses, ww2 medals will always be a travesty to medal collectors. So many stories lost unless there is paperwork or a named medal.
