I came across the grave of Ethel Isobel Robinson today at Burnmoor cemetery (near Sunderland) and it intrigued me. Her service number was 428394 and she served with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. She died on Christmas Day 1944 - at the age of 24. A search of Ancestry has revealed um, well, nothing!! Can anyone shed any light on her, please?
Hello Annie forum member Tonym will possibly be able to assist further when he logs on next regards Clive

Hello Annie Unfortumately whilst I have her on record I have no further information regarding her death. Will pass on anything that turns up, will be grateful if you hear anything further. Tony
At findmypast there are 2 possibilities, but I favour the one born in Durham in 1920. It gave the birth address as Chester Le Street, Durham. I've tried a search using the on line newspapers but can find nothing using either the name or the address. Annie, would Ancestry reveal the mothers maiden name for the above birth in 1920?

For information https://sites.google.com/site/allthingsbournmoor/church-ww1-memorial Ethel Isobel ROBINSON Corporal, No. 428394, Woman’s Auxiliary Air Force. 25th Dec. 1944, aged 24 years Buried St. Barnabas, Burnmoor, Churchyard. Ref. Sect.f., Row 4, Grave 23. CWGC Stone, with RAF badge and 2 urns. Perhaps it is worth contacting http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/research/online-exhibitions/women-of-the-air-force/womens-auxiliary-air-force-waaf-1939-1949.aspx and ask them for information ?? TD edited to add: Came across this website http://www.rafinfo.org.uk/BCWW2Losses/BC-RoH-casstats.htm whcih shows in the tables only 1 death for WAAF and that was in 1944 - perhaps its your Ethel. I also note the statement: "Furthermore, the authors indicate that 91 airwomen (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) died on duty." and "I have not, however, been able to find the 91 Women's Auxiliary Air Force casualties, reported by Martin Middlebrook and Chris Everett"
Thank you so much for everyone who has helped here. Unfortunately, despite checking out Ethel's birth record and trying to trace her family through her mother's maiden name (Wroe), I'm no further forward. Instead, I'll put an appeal in the local paper - and hopefully someone local might be able to shed a bit of light on this. If I get anything, I'll update this post!
