Drew, in case you're wondering, I just 'kicked' you from Chat. You weren't answering, maybe connection was broken like mine yesterday. Had to kick you off to clear that.

Something to get your head around in chatrooms, is that they are the least formal format imaginable. People come and go constantly, are not obliged to talk at all, or may just be doing the washing up and have left themselves logged in. They're also often empty.
Such comings and goings really aren't to be taken personally, they're just the live internet happening in a more visible manner.
It isn't the dining room at Raffles, maybe more a slightly shouty pub environment when several are in, or just a handy communication channel for a couple.
In short, it is what it is; an unmoderated free for all. There will be no control or censorship in there other than vox populi.
    S'people, innit.

I still dunno if I like open chatrooms really, but do apparently have a tendency to wander in when pissed.

I go along with that, Adam. Just like a pub...boring as hell when you're the only one sober but quite amusing when everyone's your best mate after a few jars.

What we really have to do is entice a troll into there and stamp on them in real time... :)

My apologies - I've been in there twice and got lost both times. Went on a wander then couldn't find the way in again. I got back in to find I'd been 'kicked'.

    Ouch! :)

    A question was asked in Chat last night ;
Can you see who is in Chat before you go in ?

Yes , go to bottom of the main forum page.
    http://ww2talk.com/forums/
It'll tell you who's in there.
See attachment for example of what you will see.

Just to clear up some confusion raised by new chaps about the Chat facility - found in the header and available to registered members only.

While members will be happy to guide others, there is no point in posing initial research queries there. It's not part of the open forum and there will be no chance of a response unless another member just happens to be in the chatroom at the same time.

So please be aware: If there is no other username above or below your username, you are talking to yourself. :)
If someone is already in the Chatroom, you should be able to see their username on the right-hand side, under "Online Chat users".

    • To post your questions on the forum proper - please find the most appropriate sub-forum (e.g. War at Sea, Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy, The War In The Air, etc) and click the "Start New Topic" button on the right-hand side. (If required, mods can always move a thread to another category; no need to worry too much about which sub-forum to pick.)

    • If you want to respond to an existing thread, find it and simply use the "Reply to this topic" box, found by scrolling to the bottom of the page.

Hope this will help some new members get to grips with the forum a bit quicker.
    Good luck.

    Note to new members.
CHAT is for members to talk one on one with eachother when there are 2 or more members in there.
If you have a query do not waste your time when you are alone in the chat room asking nobody at all.

START A THREAD ON THE FORUM ITSELF.

Might as well sometimes. My old man sometimes has the lights on, but there's no-one at home, especially when I talk about WW2 :P

Is it worth keeping the chat room open?
Not being used that much or is it?

Only bumping this thread so the 'Google not indexing forum' thread shows at top of home page & I don't want it too anymore as it does.

Purely to see for myself I entered the chat room at 06:30 this morning, waited around for a few minutes and then, as there was no response, bailed out.

Can't see myself using this facility again unless I get a message via my message box asking me to go to the chat room.

I'd love to chat to folk and if I knew what the topic of conversation was I'd jump in if interested.

What about having a topic day or days? Normandy on a Monday, Walcheren on a Tuesday, Italy on a Thursday, ATS on a Friday ... oh, and the rest of you can choose whatever for the weekend? ;)

Or ... be able to see what the topic is before jumping in? Mebbies a day for newbies to introduce themselves to those interested in saying hello?

Just a few musings whilst drinking my morning cuppa.
