Award Military Medal Pte. James Alfred Reddington, 7 Bn Green Howards 69 Infantry Brigade, 50th Division, 30 Corps (14427480)

On 12th September Pte. Reddington's Platoon was holding an exposed position on the right of the Company area. In the afternoon a heavy counter attack developed supported by four tanks and intense small arms fire. Initially the brunt of this counter-attack fell on this platoon.

Pte. Reddington was the P.I.A.T. man. The first bomb exploded as it left the P.I.A.T. wounding him in the face and shoulder. As the P.I.A.T. was unusable he seized a rifle and continued to shoot with it throughout the attack. His platoon commander told him to return to the R.A.P. He asked permission to stay and this granted as he did not appear to be badly wounded. The whole action went on for some four hours during which this man continued to do great execution with his rifle.

When the counter-attack was finally beaten off he was seen to be in great pain and when evacuated to the R.A.P. was found to have been seriously wounded.

This man's determination to see the operation through with his platoon despite great pain has set an example which is now freely talked of in that platoon and which will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration in future operations.
