262 Casualties per day, sustained by the British at Anzio, in the first thirty days of Operation Shingle.

The British (at least) produced almost daily cumulative casualty reports per theatre and looks like some of this has been extrapolated from these.

Below is the one from the 18th February in Italy. The inclusion of a separate section for 'Bridgehead Force' (i.e. Anzio) was included at the personal request of Churchill. Interestingly it also breaks down casualties by arm of service.

Sometimes adhoc reports were also produced for the Prime Minister as per the two below.

Excellent documents, very informative. What strikes me most is the huge disparity between the casualties suffered by the infantry and all other arms & services. Whilst I was aware that the infantry suffered the bulk of casualties these figures are staggering. 75% of the British total suffered by the infantry (including foot guards). Italy truly was a bloodbath for the PBI.

No wonder that 98% of all deserters in Italy were infantrymen.
