Accessing the forum?

for the last three or four evenings I have had a problem accessing the forum, it starts around 7pm and progressively gets worse as it gets later, it gets to the point that its not possible to log on at all.

I don't think this is to do with my server or PC as all the other programs respond as they should.

Is anyone else having this problem?

    Regards

    No problems here.

Sounds like a local broadband/internet overload where access can slow down as people go on the Internet in the evening?

Yes had this problem last night all evening.
    OK this morning.

    Hi Peter

I have experienced the same, but all other bookmarks open as rapidly as normal. I have done a full scan, grimefighter etc to see if its some 'muck' in my system, but as you say this web site for the last couple of evenings has just sat there trying to load the page and after 10 mins I give up.

For some reason it is OK in the morning and afternoon but it becomes worse into the evening.

    :(

Same thing happened to me a few times during the week, and other websites as fast as usual.
Something to do with increased number of people using the site, coming home from work?

No trouble in Oz (touch wood) and the extension lead is much longer!

At least it's not just me with the problem. Other web sites are up to speed, it seems to be talk with them problem. Very fast during the day but fails in the evening. Personally, I don't think it's due to extra demand on the site.

Can Adam come up with an explanation?

I've had the same problem as well over the last couple of days. I couldn't connect with the Forum at all (daytime and evenings), but everything else was fine. When I did eventually connect, responses were incredibly slow.

I can offer no explanation, I'm afraid.
My hope is that it may be Otto on server side getting to grips with our lack of Google indexing, but I do not know.

Personally, I've had no slow-down, but obviously that doesn't mean something isn't going awry.
Passing thought that it might be a browser compatibility thing like happened with IPB before on IE for a while. I'm on Firefox.

    Wish I could help more.

Actually I do have one thought.
Will check some of your ip addresses when back at a proper pooter.

    Maybe something, maybe not.
Rob & Peter are on very similar IPs, and redtop and tricky.
There may conceivably be a choke point somewhere between that/those locations and here. If that is the case, it'd be a case of 'wait and see' I'm afraid.
Can't see a site IP ban that might also have had an effect. (very similar IPs to a banned one have suffered in the past on VB).
Can't see a daily system task that runs at those sort of times either. (remember the morning dead time every day on VB).

Final thought - corrupted cookies, or one that's got a bit bloated.
That would fit with a site-specific problem.
Clear cookies and see if that helps?

    Hi Adam

I do not think many are still using IE as a browser.

Choke point - but why on this forum only, others work fine, and at normal speed + it only happens from about 17:00 UK time

Cookies - prior to commenting above I went through every Avast piece of software I have access to to clean out any 'muck' but it still happens.

    edited to add:
18:00 UK time, and it seems to be working normally :)

Avast and malware software does not necessarily clean corrupted cookies. They are a different thing.

Choke point: you are in a unique location, but one very close to others with a problem - the forum is hosted in one place (in Texas, if I recall), there can indeed be some problem that is only happening between those places, whether physical or virtual I would never be able to speculate. The only way I could firm up that theory is if there was bother with a site hosted in the same place as us.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's Otto mucking about.

    Hi,

I'm no longer able to see 'new content' - it just says "no new content". Have I pressed the wrong button?

Tom, I have the same problem, I have to hit the New Content button twice to get a result. Worth a try

It's now 9pm and things are looking up, the Forum is back to its usual speed thanks to Adam and his advice re cookies. Seems to have done the trick. Hope it's the same for everyone else

    Thanks Adam
