58 Detail Issue Depot RASC

  1. I have just received a service record for a guy in this unit. They were in Tunisia (well maybe not all of the time but that part of the world) from 8 November 1942 and Italy from 10 September 1943 according to the medal requests.

I have found out that DIDs are small units - establishment 36 and seem to provide the refilling points for a brigade. Is there a RASC expert who can fill in the detail of their role for me and is there anyone who knows about 58 DID?

New subject - I've just bought 3 service records with no next of kin form. The army is great, very little seems to be missing, the RAF have redacted details of two short hospital stays from their brief record (and I persuaded someone to let me have the dates on the phone) and the RN just provide the list of ships that you can see in the WW1 records at Kew, no personal information at all on the this or the RAF one. So my advice is don't waste £30 for RAF or RN records unless you're really desperate!
