    Hi all :)

I am a keen reader of history and whilst doing my family tree, it suddenly occurred to me that there is no point getting back umpteen generations when there is no narrative about anyone in between!! My grandfather served in the above as a POW and I know precious little about his experiences as he never related them to his wife or children. History is all about the "story", not just a list of dates.

So here I am :) . This looks like a great starting point and I look forward to reading the stories not just of my own family but also of those of other people. Always loved history and recently on holiday in South Africa took the long roadtrip to Spion Kop. It made me realise what a strange mistress the military is .... whilst most of my ancestors in 1900 never travelled more than twenty miles, there is a memorial to boys who travelled 6,000 miles only to be cut down on a godforsaken hill that they would never have heard of when they signed up.

I look forward to being an active part of the forum... and as a Winchester dweller, if anyone ever needs anything here then do feel free to ask! I am always happy to help and even though I am not a record specialist I am happy to go pootling through records if you point me the right way for a specific file!

Welcome aboard the forum Andy. It wasn't until I researched my forefathers military travels, that I realised why so many football grounds had an area of terracing called the Kop (most famously Liverpool).
