Hi I promised to help someone research their relative but have absolutely nothing to assist them. He was Lance Corporal 324334 George Goodwin JOHNSTON Kia 18 March 1944 Buried Beach head War cemetery in Grave I.C.2. Can anyone help me with their actions or WD for this date at all, please. Many thanks, Graeme
graeme I think that if you look up the 56th Division in Tunisia and Italy you will find that they landed with X corps under Lt.Gen Dick Mac Creery in the US 5th Army at Salerno Fighting their way past Naples - Garigliano and also at Anzio where L/Cpl Johnston was killed and buried Cheers
graeme - CORRECTION - NOT 56th Division - try 5th Division (Globetrotters ) from Landing at Sicily to Anzio then alongside 1st Canadian Div into Italy - Sangro - then Garigliano to Anzio Cheers
Hi Graeme, The units war diaries will shed some light on proceedings. Being that there are four covering 12 months I suspect the 144 ones maybe rather thick and detailed: WO 169/10189 2 Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1943 Jan.- Dec. WO 170/1372 2 Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1944 Jan-Mar WO 170/1373 2 Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1944 Apr-Jun WO 170/1373 2 Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1944 Jul WO 169/16275 2 Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1944 Aug.- Dec. Cheers Andy
Just had a look in 5th Div history , nothing for 18th March 44 but there was an attack on the 19th with 6 Seaforths, 2 Cameronians & 9 Commando . The Cameronians ran into a similar attack launched at the same time by the Germans they lost 12 killed , 49 wounded & 35 Missing. That was in the area of ''The Fortress'', the location of which has been discussed on the forum.
Hi All, Sorry about the delay, been away from the computer for a while !! Many thanks for all the replies, will have to do a bit more digging, Raegards, Graeme
Graeme. I am running a battlefield tour at the end of Apr 12 to Anzio so if your chum wants a photograph of the headstone, do say and I would be happy to get you one. Regards FdeP
Hi FdeP Many thanks for your kind offer but the family concerned already have a photo of the grave, and also one of the original wooden cross. Once again, many thanks, a generous offer, Regards, Graeme
