Sometime ago I read a report on the British soldier fighting the German soldier in France post Dunkirk. For the life of me I can't find it now or remember where I read it-I'm fairly sure it's in a book

A couple of possible Clues that could be my imagination:

I think it was a Brigadier or higher ie a Bde or Div Commander - Possibly Alan Brooke? It mentions something like, in an equal fight the British soldier was more than a match for the German and found himself retreating time and time again not because he was loosing the fight but because his flanks were being compromised.

Over to you Ladies and Gents

As I recall, a similar German report has sometimes been quoted in books about 1940.

I've got that one, it's the British Army one I'm after.
