The WW2 memorial plaque at this school, between Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent, had the name of a German former pupil, V. Sarland, added in the mid-2000s, according to the headmaster, who gave me access to the school chapel (a tin tabernacle). Is there any information available on him? The plaque has his years at the school as being 1913-1920, which seems both an odd and a long time-period.

Could it be this man. He appears to have an Indian family background, being married in Bombay in 1929.

How odd. I wonder where the story that he was German came from then? There's no-one on the WW1 plaque who could be German.

    Ahaaaaa

His name apparently was originally Sauerlander - see the image below - this may well be the 'German' reference

UK, Roll of the Indian Medical Service, 1615 -1930
    Name: Victor Henry Sarland
    Birth Date: 30 Aug 1905
    Event Date: 1918

There is also another record concerning his marriage in India but I cannot access it

Well found, TD. The headmaster had said that there'd been some opposition to his name being added to the plaque; those who objected must have been judging him on his surname when he was at the school, and not on his WW2 service.

    His fathers probate basic details:
Victor Egmont Sarland in the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995

    Name: Victor Egmont Sarland
Death Date: 24 Feb 1910 (I have revised this info as reading the actual probate his DoD is 1919)
    Death Place: Staffordshire, England
    Probate Date: 17 Apr 1919
    Registry: London, England

    TD

    edited to add:
The above, his father also has a marriage record in India - like father like son
    India, Select Marriages, 1792-1948
    Victor Egmont Sarland

Just to note - there are a smattering of Sauerlanders still around today, so some did not change their name. It would appear that many came to London in the early 1800's as most seem to have registration (birth, marriage and death) details in the east end of London.
Thats the history bit for today
