KEYES Geoffrey Charles Tasker, Lieutenant Colonel No11 Commando killed in action at Beda, Libya, November 1941 VC & MC [CWGC data] Lieutenant Colonel, 71081 Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons) Royal Armoured Corps attached to No11 [Scottish] Commando killed 18/11/1941 aged 24. Awarded Croix de Guerre. Son of Admiral of the Fleet Roger John Brownlow Keyes, G.C.B., K.C.V.O., C.M:G., D.S.O., A.D.C., 1st Baron Keyes, and of Lady Keyes (nee Bowlby), of Buckingham. Buried at Benghazi War Cemetery, Libya.
The citation in the London Gazette of the 19th June, 1942, gives the following details : Lieutenant-Colonel Keyes commanded a detachment of a force which landed some 250 miles behind the enemy lines, in North Africa, to attack Headquarters Base installations and communications. Lieutenant-Colonel Keyes deliberately selected the command of the party detailed to attack the residence and Headquarters of the General Officer commanding the German Forces in North Africa. This attack meant almost certain death for those who took part in it. The disposition of his detachment left him only one officer and a N.C.O. with whom to break into General Rommel's residence. On the night 17/18 November, 1941, he boldly led his party to the front door and demanded entrance. It was unfortunately necessary to shoot the sentry; the noise aroused the house, so that speed became of the first importance. Lieutenant-Colonel Keyes instinctively took the lead and emptied his revolver with great success into the first room. He then entered the second room but was mortally wounded almost immediately. By his fearless disregard of the dangers which he ran and of which he was fully aware, and by his magnificent leadership and outstanding gallantry Lieutenant Colonel Keyes set an example of supreme self-sacrifice and devotion to duty.

DURRANT Thomas Frank, Sergeant, No1 Commando, killed in action at Nazaire Raid, France, March 1942 VC [CWGC data] Sergeant 1874047, Royal Engineers attached to No1 Commando killed 28/03/1942 aged 23 Buried at Escoublac-La-Baule War Cemetery France
Citation: The following details are taken from the London Gazette of 15th June, 1945 : On 28th March 1942 H.M. Motor Launch 306 was heavily attacked while proceeding up the river Loire in the raid on St Nazaire. Serjeant Durrant in charge of a Lewis gun in a completely exposed position engaged enemy guns and searchlights on shore. He was severely wounded in the arm but refused to leave his gun. Later when the launch was attacked at close range by a German destroyer, Serjeant Durrant fired cooley and continuously at the destroyer's bridge drawing on himself the enemy fire and suffering many further wounds. When so weak that he had to support himself on the gun mounting, he went on firing until his gun was silenced and the enemy boarded the motor lauch and took prisoner those still alive. This very gallant and skilful N.C.O. died later of his wounds.

HARDEN Henry Eric ,Lance Corporal, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 45, Royal Marine Commando killed in action at Brachlerbreek, Holland 23 January 1945 aged 32 VC [CWGC data] Son of William Thomas Harden and Fanny Marie Harden, of Northfleet, Kent; husband of Maud Harden, of Northfleet. Buried at Nederweert War Cemetery, Limberg, Holland
Citation: The citation in the London Gazette of 9th March, 1945, gives the following details: In North-West Europe on 23rd January, 1945 the leading section of a Royal Marine Commando Troop having come under intense machine-gun fire was ordered to make for some houses close by. Four of the section had been wounded and were left lying in the open. Under continuous fire Lance Corporal Harden at once went forward and with great coolness and bravery attended to the four casualties. He then carried one of them back to cover. He was ordered not to go forward again and an attempt was made to bring in the remaining casualties with the aid of tanks, but this proved unsuccessful owing to the heavy and accurate fire of anti-tank guns. A second attempt under a smoke-screen also proving unsuccessful, Lance Corporal Harden insisted in going forward with a volunteer stretcher party and succeeded in bringing back another badly wounded man. He went out a third time, and whilst returning with the stretcher party, he was killed. Throughout this long period Lance-Corporal Harden displayed superb devotion to duty and personal courage of the highest order. His action was directly responsible for saving the lives of the wounded brought in, while his complete contempt for all personal danger, and the magnificent example he set of cool courage and determination to continue with his work, whatever the odds, was an inspiration to his comrades and will never be forgotten by those who saw it.

KNOWLAND George A, Lieutenant, No1 Commando, killed in action at Hill 170, Kangaw, Burma, January 1945. VC [CWGC data] Lieutenant 323566, Royal Norfolk Regiment attached to No1 Commando killed 31/1/1945 aged 22. Son of Arthur Philip and Mary Elizabeth Knowland, of Catford, London; husband of Ruby Knowland. Buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma.
The following details are given in the London Gazette of April 10th, 1945 : In Burma on 31st January 1945, near Kangaw, Lieutenant Knowland was commanding a forward platoon subject to very heavy attacks throughout the whole day. In spite of the ferocity of the attacks he moved about encouraging his men and throwing grenades at the enemy, often from completely exposed positions. When the crew of one of his forward bren guns had been wounded, he manned the gun himself, standing on the top of the trench firing and keeping the enemy at a distance until another crew took over. Later he took over a 2-inch mortar and in spite of heavy enemy fire stood in the open firing from the hip, inflicting heavy casualties. When all bombs had been expended he continued to fight the enemy at close quarters with rifle and tommy-gun fire, stemming the assault and killing and wounding many of the enemy, until he himself was mortally wounded. Such was the inspiration of his magnificent heroism, that, though fourteen out of twenty-four of his platoon became casualties at an early stage, and six of his positions were overrun by the enemy, his men held on through twelve hours of continuous and fierce fighting until re-inforcements arrived. If this Northern end of the hill had fallen, the rest of the hill would have been endangered, the beach-head dominated by the enemy, and other units farther inland cut off from their source of supplies. As it was, the final successful counter-attack was later launched from the vital ground which Lieutenant Knowland had taken such a gallant part in holding.

HUNTER Thomas Peck, Corporal, No43 Commando, killed in action at Lake Commachio, Italy April 1945. VC. [CWGC data] Corporal CH/X110296 killed 3/4/1945 aged 21. Son of Ramsay and Mary Hunter of Edinburgh. Buried at Argenta Gap War Cemetery, Italy
The London Gazette of 13th June, 1945, gives the following details: In Italy Corporal Hunter of "C" Troop of a Royal Marine Commando was in charge of a Bren group of the leading sub-section. Having advanced to within 400 yards of the final objective he realised that his troop had to cross open ground where enemy fire would cause heavy casualties. Corporal Hunter seized the Bren gun and charged across 200 yards of open ground, attracting most of the enemy fire. Showing complete disregard for this fire he alone cleared the enemy position, capturing six Germans. The remainder fled over the canal. The troop now became the target for fire from the opposite bank. In full view, Corporal Hunter fired and drew most of the enemy fire while the greater part of the troop gained cover. Shouting encouragement to the remainder he continued firing with great accuracy until finally he was hit and killed. There can be no doubt that Corporal Hunter offered himself as a target in order to save his troop. By the skilful and accurate use of his Bren gun he demoralised the enemy, and later silenced many of the Spandaus firing on his troop, so that many of the troop made their final objective before he was killed. Throughout the operation his magnificent courage, leadership and cheerfulness had been an inspiration to his comrades.

LASSEN Anders Frederick Emil V. Schau Major, attached to No2 SS Brigade killed in action at Lake Commachio, Italy, April 1945. VC. & MC[two bars] [CWGC data] Major 234907,Special Boat Service, S.A.S. Regiment, Army Air Corps killed 9/4/1945 aged 24. Son of Emil Victor Schau Lassen and Suzanne Maria Signe Lassen, of Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark. Buried in the same cemetery as Corporal Hunter at Argenta Gap War Cemetery, Italy
The London Gazette of 4th September, 1945, gives the following particulars: In Italy, on the night of 8th/9th April, 1945, Major Lassen was ordered to take out a patrol and raid the north shore of Lake Comacchio. His task was to cause casualties, capture prisoners and give the impression of a major landing. The patrol was challenged and came under machine-gun fire. Major Lassen himself attacked with grenades and silenced two enemy posts, capturing two prisoners and killing several Germans. The patrol had suffered casualties and was still under fire. Major Lassen moved forward and flung more grenades into a third enemy position, calling upon the enemy to surrender. He was then hit and mortally wounded, but whilst falling he flung a grenade, wounding more of the enemy and enabling his patrol to capture this last position. Finally, he refused to be evacuated lest he should impede the withdrawal and endanger further lives. His high sense of devotion to duty and the esteem in which he was held by the men he led, added to his own magnificent courage, enabled Major Lassen to carry out with complete success all the tasks he had been given.

    A brief explanation of ABC

A system code named "Airborne Cigar" or ABC for short, was devised to jam the VHF frequencies used by the German controllers. The equipment consisted of a panoramic receiver and three transmitters, which enabled the frequency being used by the fighter controller to be identified and then jammed. An 8th crew member, the Special Operator, who was a German-speaker, operated the equipment and listened in for the controller's transmissions. When he was sure that he was listening to the master controller, he jammed that frequency and if the Germans changed frequency he had to find the new frequency and jam that within seconds.

    Hi Kevin

    Thanks for the information.
MV Rangitane. On the memorial are only ten crew members listed and I only use the names listed. I will put a foot note that there were others that perished and who are not mentioned on the memorial

    Regards
    GM

Hi, the war memorial in Mile End Colchester is where Sgt L. H. HOWES GPR. is remembered, he was believed to be buried in Oosterbeek until 1998, however his remains were found on the Sonnenburg estate( almost oppersite the Hartenstien ) in 1994 and he and two others were reburied in Oosterbeek war cemetery on 18th September 1998, with full military honours. On that day a short service was organised at the war memorial to coincide with the service in Holland, and a wreath laid by a Recce D Troop Arnhem veteran, I do a little maintaiance of this memorial and this week walked across the road into the churchyard and just by the door found a tablet with airborne wings to HARRY BOULTER MM. (Lance-Corporal) died 4-8-1980. He was a member of `X `TROOP but injured on landing had to be left behind, in the book the Guinea Pig Club by Raymond Foxall there is a chapter called leaving Boulter behind and in it a very touching gesture by Major General A. J. DEANE DRUMMOND CB. DSO. MC. and his concern for his men . LOFTY

    Hi KevW4

No I did not take it the wrong way. I have been tempted on many occasion to add names that are not on memorials, but have been shot down. What I do now is put a foot note, after all they should be mentioned, they did their bit for their country.

I would really appreciate any information about any of our Eastham men.

A previous post has details of a number of men from Bromborough - Bromborough and Eastham are neighbouring villages and some of the men listed as not appearing in Bromborough do appear in Eastham!

I was interested to note that Glosterman had details of the Trinity House pilots memorial.
My grandfather was Arthur Witherden and a friend who visited the National Memorial sent me a similar photo, noting the spelling mistake I have contacted them and they have since confirmed that Trinity House have agreed to replace the plaque with the correct spelling.
There was a brass memorial on Terrace Pier from where the pilots departed to join ships at Gravesend for those lost in WW11 .This has since dissappeared?
