I came across reference in an SOE P/F to an officer being awarded a 'wound-stripe' - I know the Americans have the Purple Heart but the issue of wound stripes seems to have fallen out of use in UK. Anyone have further info?
Jedburgh - they were still in vogue in WW2 as I was awarded one and I have seen a photo recently with another person wearing one - perhaps to-day - the just give them money ! I know I lost 3d per day by coming out of the line ....on a stretcher but that didn't matter to those in the high places of the day - no 'elf and safety then Cheers
Yes.They were small gold wire bars sewn on the left sleeve, just above the cuff at an Angle. They died out during WW2...I don't know why? for they seemed to be a recognition of a mans service. I have two. One for the Normandy mine wounding, the other for the Holland one. Hi Tom hope all is well. Sapper
Dad with his 2 wound stripes as Sapper has explained above. Though wounded 3 times he only had the 2 stripes.
See Pauls' photo of John Dudley, post #2 . He wears his 2 on his blazer still. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/italy/14327-great-italy-veterans-thread.html
1960s opposite the Rifle Depot Winchester - Peninsula Barracks there was a militaria shop. Closing down, you could go in and rummage through trunks filled with badges, buttons and yes many of the gold wire twist wound strips and all sorts of bits and pieces, handfuls - he would say shilling! Off you would go as pleased as punch. On one trip I got a Rifle Brigade badge silver hallmarked, took it to an antique shop in the Square Winchester and made a few quid! Sadly when the shop closed the trunks were chucked onto the back of a dustcart and ended up in land fill behind St Catherine's Hill Winchester! If only we knew.
That uniform top is not a war time one. It was donated by an old RSM. We added the the genuine company badges, and insignia as an aid for my lecture purposes. Cheers Sapper
I have quite a lot of memorabilia. There is one that shows the entire invasion fleet positions before the forming of Piccadilly Circus. All in their correct serials. Ships in the Piccadilly Circus had to join and peel off in the correct sequence, as they set sail for Normandy. Sapper
