Doesn't surprise me as England can't waste 20 minutes passing to the back four in the hope that they can start a good attack from there- it has to be from mid

field = But then there wasn't one - only Gerrard who thought he was playing for Liverpool by heading to Suarez for the killer goal- and Welbeck and Sturridge

were too fond of dribbling instead of backing Rooney who was a bit unlucky to head against the bar in the first half..perhaps in four years time the

youngsters will have learned how to play in BIG games…..but I won't hold my breath…

    Cheers

I gave up on the Scottish Football Association many years ago and have been a loyal supporter of England since that time from the very high point of the

World Cup of 1966 - DOWN to to-day as I forecast they would lose as they play like the very successful Liverpool team of Bill Shankly- which was a long

time ago whereas I very much doubt that Uruquay even saw Liverpool play BUT they did study Spain over the last six to eight years ago- NO team to-day can

afford to pass to the back three or four in the hope of a successful attack - that is the task of the mid-field - and when there isn't a mid-field

except Gerrard - then you will lose every game -particularly when the youngsters want to show off how they can dribble - doesn't impress defences like

Uruquay…sorry about that maybe in four years time…

    Cheers

Hell,i can remember the 1950 World Cup.the hype was not as much and matych reports were always second hand...beaten by the US who in reality were nearly all UK ex players...captain,with respect was a Man Utd reject.

Still its the better team on the day and tonight.England were not able to take advantage when they were on top....best palyers usually exploit the chances and England failed on that.

But as regards El Biteo,England surely had a game plan to restrict his effectiverness but the excellent player he is,he took his chances in a superb fashion...his second goal came to too late for us...by this time Uruguay did what you would expect any team to do and that was to box up the game.

    Very sorry game.

We spend near on 4 years complaining about selections, team spirit, etc. and two weeks thinking they are going to win.

I'm sorry but our world status has gone. They are all paid too much and do not really care. The contrast between 5 Live supporters and BBC was very stark. The side line managers are baying for blood. If the manager gives them a bollocking at half time, do they really worry. they can still go home to their mansions, WAGs, fast cars and fat salaries but the reality is that the Premiership is training the other countries players who are better than ours but our players are demanding the same salary without the same commitment/passion.

Did you see the Japan v's Greece game? Japan committed, trying, controlled, not reacting. Great performance.
Greece, dirty, complaining, time waisting, The point when three Greek players tackled one other and all three fell down.
Best of luck to them both.

Very disappointed in the play of England, but they are not the only ones to surprise. Look at Spain who are out of it and Brazil who are not what we have come to expect.

    Anyone forecasting the winner? Germany?

England. Outdone by Pirlo in the first match and Suarez in the second.

They were always going to struggle to get put of a group where they were the 3rd or 4th best team.

I thought that they played better in the first game, more creative, more one touch stuff, and as a result looked more likely to score.
In the second they just looked like they always did under Erikson & Cappelo, boring and toothless.

As for the tournament winner, I still can't see past Brazil or Argentina, for all the hype over Germany and Holland.

But we shall have to see.

I hope that the tournament starts to improve, despite all the goals (ave 3 per game) I haven't seen a good game yet. But I did miss Holland V Australia which most seem to think was game of the tournament so far.

Uruguay v England is the first match I have watched in this World Cup. Despite the pundits predictions of an England win, I thought they would lose and they didn't disappoint me.

Not since 1970 have I seen an England team that I thought could win the World Cup, but every 4 years my expectation and hope rises; can they do it, will they do it? But every 4 years we wheel out the weak, feeble and inept, who flatter to decieve in the 'warm ups' and then crash out of the big competetion.

At least England have been consistent over the last 40 years...

Did anybody notice - After one of Suarez's goals the camera focussed on the Uruguayan supporters celebrating his goal. In amongst those supporters was a man that looked like Ronald McDonald, wearing a ginger wig with tartan hat and waving the Scottish Saltire. Priceless...

    Best,

    Steve.

    Sorry Michael,

I was just saying in my very bad Spanish, that Mexico played well and made Brazil look ordinary. I've always had a soft spot for Mexico, I think it is their kit, (La Verde) which is very striking, although they played in red last night.

Well, your paragraph is actually quite understandable and well written. Just missed a couple of letters
